Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format, that has the original ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the label rims. Later pressings had this changed to the EMI text.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks that show little.

Cat Number: SHVL 793.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. A very good solid weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, but a complete copy that plays beautifully and with a cover showing little wear is far harder. A known difficult cover, most suffer badly from severe rubbing and ringwear, this has little wear at all. It also includes the original lyric insert sheet and Harvest promotional inner.

Original Year of Release: 1971 and the matrix numbers below are that of a first-pressed copy with very low stampers for a popular rock album.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second of four absolute classics this legendary heavy band made and their final one for Harvest. Following the magnificent high standards of In Rock this was never going to be easy, but Fireball does just that. Generally less volume and slightly more subtle songs here, this fine set was a great prelude to the classics Machine Head and the blistering double live set Made in Japan. Featuring their undisputed classic line-up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice this is one of the band’s most treasured albums and beautifully packaged too and what a delight to offer in a very fine, little worn cover and practically Mint insert.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and worthy of (+) I feel for such an uncompromising format. An unlaminated gatefold with the outer surfaces finely textured, not only that, the card is quite soft and delicate and it simply does not wear well (to say the very least). The black finish making it near impossible to find devoid of some wear. The inner faces are smooth. It was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. The lyric insert and Harvest inner are also included.

Cover Front: Not entirely blemish-free, but not a lot to fault on this very attractive front. The lack of rubbing or ‘speckle’ to the raised textured surfaces is seldom seen and this one has little at all. There is some fine surface creasing on the spine edge but few others with barely any at all away from the sides. Colour remains strong but not quite intense black and any traces of handling are equally mild.

Cover Back: Even more delicate and critical due to the quite thick and solidly pressed record being stored against this vulnerable black back for many years. Most have heavy ringwear, deep, and very obvious pressmarks and rubbing is rife on most of these. Well this has only the faintest possible record pressmark at the top but no penetrating ringwear at all and any rubbing is almost minuscule. The lack of speckle to both faces is unusual but always most welcome. Again some fine edge hairline type creases that show little and all considered, this is a very fine back to complement the attractive front. Note the fine detail of the comet-tail fading around the blue planet.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely any rubbing or wear at all.

Top Edges: Both dead straight with quite thin folds and construction. Both lie dead flat and with barely any surface wear at all.

Bottom Edges: Both practically as above, few will ever avoid some wear on these most vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square with the edges meeting up flush and parallel. This shows little wear at all, even the folds have avoided any noteworthy rubbing. All text is present with no wear, but now appears more as white so possible fading to the text.

Corners: Only very small tip rubs which of for a black revealing cover, is highly commendable. Very fine shape is retained and no evidence of any tip-ins on these most fragile of corners.

Cover Summary: A very nice, little worn example. Any major wear totally ruins it and most found are very tired looking, tatty and ringworn. This is not perfect, but it sets the bar high for sure. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this has the lining inside but is not secure at the top, but still neat. Lightly darkened with age and one stain on the top of the back. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit. Most will know this inner well – it promotes the early Harvest albums.

The Lyric Insert: MINT: simply as made. Often missing and more seldom seen like this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this critically graded with little to fault. Clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks are tiny, few and very faint indeed and there are NO penetrating scratches at all. This should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very rich sound. Barely even a hint of any surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted. Some incredible detail and the percussion on ‘The Mule’ takes the breath away. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this rock classic. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. This is a very solid early-pressed copy confirmed by those stampers seen above and I enjoyed it immensely for looks and sound.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
