AT THE time the band had been castigated for switching musical direction and giving guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore the perfect excuse he'd been looking for to exit the band and get Rainbow together. 'Stormbringer' was received with some reservation by their huge fan base, most accusing them of going through the motions and leaning far to deeply in the funk rock arena, but with Blackmore firmly out of the way they indulged themselves completely.

'Come Taste The Band' is on reflection a truly wonderful record although at the time you'd be hard pressed to find one supporter such was the universal rejection. The appointment of guitarist Tommy Bolin only served to polerise the fan base - his reputation as a hot shot player preceeded him but those loyal to Blackmore would not accept his position in such a prestigeous unit. And, as if to underscore the union, the fact that he was not British but an American further aggrevated loyalists. Those with a more open mind found the appointment to be wildely exciting. Bolin's previous work had indicated a hugely accomplished talent with a gounding in both hard rock and jazz rock. The possibilities seemed almost limitless and they were not to be disapointed.

'Come Taste The Band' is on reflection a truly magnificient work showcasing a band on fire with ideas and enthusiasm. Sure, the funk rock vibe is largely the main thrust of the album but the blues rock foundations are still firmly on display with tracks like 'Comin Home' and 'Lady Luck' throwing up two very good reasons why this band should have persevered with their beliefs instead of splitting up the following year. Glenn Hughes is magnificient leading the charge with super funky hard rockin' tracks such as 'Gettin' Tighter' and 'You Keep On Moving' allowing his vocals to soar and scream better than ever.

Its hard to believe but this album I now believe is as important a statement in the Purple cannon as say, 'Burn'. Yes, its that good and that significant. 

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Spine is straight, stiff and uncrushed. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 43 years after release. Grades as Nr shop fresh MINT-!
