THE PURPLE LABELS CARRY THE FIRST PRESS MATRIX: TPS 3505 A-1U / TPS 3505 B-1U WITH "PORKY+MEL+TRISH (side one) & "PECKO"(side two) RUN OFF ETCHINGS
AND THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATTE SLEEVE PRINTED BY "Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." DATE CODED 7401 (January 1974)
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL EMI COMPANY INNER SLEEVE

Although it shook the band's fan base to its core, the acrimonious departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover served to rejuvenate Deep Purple in time for 1973's aptly named Burn album, which unquestionably showed huge improvement over their lackluster previous effort, Who Do We Think We Are. And in an interesting twist rarely attempted before or since, new recruits David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass and vocals, ex-Trapeze) traded lead singing duties on virtually every track -- an enviable tag team, as both possessed exceptional pipes.
The phenomenal title track started things off at full throttle, actually challenging the seminal "Highway Star" for the title of best opener to any Deep Purple album, while showcasing the phenomenal drumming of Ian Paice. Up next, the intro to the equally timeless "Might Just Take Your Life," however simple from a technical perspective, remains one of organist Jon Lord's signature moments, and the downright nasty "Lay Down, Stay Down" roared behind wildly careening starts and stops and a fantastic Ritchie Blackmore guitar solo that left no doubt as to who was the band's primal force, regardless of lineup. Moving right along, and though it was rarely included in latter-day greatest-hits sets, "What's Going on Here" was about as good a single as Purple ever wrote; "You Fool No One" was compelling for its sheer intensity; and the funky "Sail Away" was a sign of the band's future direction in years to come. Lastly, the fantastic slow-boiling blues of "Mistreated" closed the album proper, one of the finest tracks Purple ever recorded with a command solo performance from Coverdale that was as sensitive as it was devastating. So impassioned was the singer's delivery, in fact, that the song would remain his personal in-concert trademark with Whitesnake long after his tenure with Deep Purple came to a close.
Like the vast majority of Burn, this song's greatness qualifies it for the highest echelons of hard rock achievement, and therefore the album is an essential item in the discography of any self-respecting music fan.

Track Listing:
Side 1: Burn / Might Just Take Your Life / Lay Down, Stay Down / Sail Away
Side 2: You Fool No One / What's Goin' On Here / Mistreated / "A" 200

LABELS: CLEAN, BRIGHT and UNMARKED with a dozen or so spindle traces evident when angled under a bright light. This copy has not been overplayed
VINYL Visual: The surfaces retain their original DEEP, GLOSSY sheen. There are some light marks but these have NO major audio consequence - The LP plays BEAUTIFULLY throughout
VINYL Audio: The audio is absolutely OUTSTANDING - CRYSTAL CLEAR, VIBRANT, POWERFUL SOUND. There are NO scratches, NO sticks, NO jumps, barely any clicks/pops (really, hardly any and only between a couple of the tracks). The sound quality is OUTSTANDINGLY STRONG and the record plays to an impressively high standard with NO discernible groove-wear and NO distortion. This must be critically graded EXCELLENT for audio - SOUNDS SUPERB. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'About Me' page)
SLEEVE: The first issue sleeve is in VERY GOOD++ condition. This cover is incredibly prone to wear, especially as the first press vinyl is so thick and heavy but this sleeve has held up well. It does display some 'ring' record impression but the whole sleeve has NO damage and the spine still displays all text CLEAR and BOLD (please see photographs)
