DEEP PURPLE
Burn
UK EMI/PURPLE RECORDS (TPS 3505) FIRST PRESSING (February 1974) OF DEEP PURPLE'S TREMENDOUS "Burn" LP IN BEAUTIFUL, BARELY PLAYED CONDITION AND DELIVERING FLAWLESS SOUND ON MY SYSTEM - AT A VERY LOUD VOLUME! (see detailed audio assessment below) - FANTASTIC COPY
PRESSED ON QUALITY MID/HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL (surprisingly thick and chunky for the time)
THE LP HAS THE FIRST ISSUE EMI/PURPLE LABELS WITH THE "The Gramophone Co Ltd." RIM TEXT (on Side One) AND THE "EMI RECORDS..." RIM TEXT (on Side Two)
THE LP WAS RELEASED AT THE POINT WHERE EMI WERE CHANGING THEIR LABEL TEXT FROM "THE GRAMOPHONE CO" TO "EMI RECORDS" AND THE VERY FIRST ISSUE LABELS HERE PERFECTLY ILLUSTRATE THE POINT - JUST A FEW MONTHS LATER BOTH LABELS WOULD READ "EMI RECORDS"
FIRST ISSUE MATRIX: TPS 3505 A-1U (etched "PORKY+MEL+TRISH") / TPS 3505 B-1U (etched "PECKO")
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 3/RA and 3/MG
AND THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATTE SLEEVE PRINTED BY "Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." DATE CODED '7401' (January 1974)
Although it shook the band's fan base to its core, the acrimonious departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover served to rejuvenate Deep Purple in time for 1973's aptly named Burn album. And in an interesting twist rarely attempted before or since, new recruits David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass and vocals, ex-Trapeze) traded lead singing duties on virtually every track -- an enviable tag team, as both possessed exceptional abilities.
The phenomenal title track started things off at full throttle, actually challenging the seminal "Highway Star" for the title of best opener to any Deep Purple album, while showcasing the phenomenal drumming of Ian Paice. Up next, the intro to the equally timeless "Might Just Take Your Life," however simple from a technical perspective, remains one of organist Jon Lord's signature moments, and the downright nasty "Lay Down, Stay Down" roared behind wildly careening starts and stops and a fantastic Ritchie Blackmore guitar solo that left no doubt as to who was the band's primal force, regardless of lineup. Moving right along, and though it was rarely included in latter-day greatest-hits sets, "What's Going on Here" was about as good a single as Purple ever wrote; "You Fool No One" was compelling for its sheer intensity; and the funky "Sail Away" was a sign of the band's future direction in years to come. Lastly, the fantastic slow-boiling blues of "Mistreated" closed the album proper, one of the finest tracks Purple ever recorded with a command solo performance from Coverdale that was as sensitive as it was devastating. So impassioned was the singer's delivery, in fact, that the song would remain his personal in-concert trademark with Whitesnake long after his tenure with Deep Purple came to a close.
Like the vast majority of Burn, this song's greatness qualifies it for the highest echelons of hard rock achievement, and therefore the album is an essential item in the discography of any self-respecting music fan.
Track Listing:
Side 1: Burn / Might Just Take Your Life / Lay Down, Stay Down / Sail Away
Side 2: You Fool No One / What's Goin' On Here / Mistreated / "A" 200
LABELS: The labels are practically like-new - clean and bright with no unwanted marks/writing and just a coupe of light spindle traces - beautiful barely played copy
VINYL Visual: The vinyl still retains its original deep, glossy sheen and is completely unmarked - the record shines like new
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio quality throughout. This LP is beautifully recorded with an incredibly strong and vibrant sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks/pops and no surface noise. The sound quality is really sensational and the LP plays to the highest possible standard with all frequencies bright and clear and no groove-wear or distortion (it has seen little play). Critically graded MINT for audio (it's flawless) - this is a really fantastic copy
SLEEVE: This cover is incredibly prone to wear, especially as the first press vinyl is so thick and heavy but this sleeve has held up remarkably well. Apart from a couple of creases towards the spine it's in great shape with very little edge or spine wear and all text on the spine is clear and bold (this text is also reproduced on the top edge of the sleeve). There is none of the common ring wear or rubbing so prevalent on this cover, the surfaces are clean and fresh. A very fine example of this delicate sleeve - a very strong EXCELLENT
