Rarity: Very scarce as a first issue, this album did not sell at all well and went largely ignored in the UK and United States. Initial first pressings did not include the small EMI logo at the 9 o’clock position and few would have been purchased with the first format label.

Brief Info: The third Deep Purple album that moved their early sound on still further. More progressive, hard and psychedelic rock with elements of Baroque orchestration. The gatefold cover includes a black and white version of the famous painting ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ from the early 16th-century by the Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch. My close-up picture shows the band included in the picture on the cover’s front. A painting that has always attracted controversy, and using it on an album cover was always deemed risky. Widely ignored on issue, the rock buying public were more into blues based material at the time and sales were low. Hence genuine first pressings are difficult to find. I rate it highly myself, it’s quite varied and includes a superb version of Donovan’s mellow gem ‘Lalena’. The final track includes lush orchestration which was a prelude to their upcoming first live album. This a very fine example and now an album in demand.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format with the outside faces laminated, the inside is matt and smooth. It has the original UK Hieronymus Bosch cover (with 'hidden' band picture within). Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and Co Ltd, includes the Harvest black and white promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain excellent shine and clarity with any dulling mild and light. Barely any trace of lifting or creasing so the famous painting by Bosch can be seen to near maximum advantage. This will prove difficult to much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The deep purple inside is equally impressive with little to fault at all, this cover the very best I have seen by some distance. There is a small factory correction sticker for the catalogue number near the lower right, this guaranteed original and authentic.

Top Edges: Both quite straight, fully laminated and smooth with barely even a trace of wear.

Bottom Edges: Very similar again with just a quite small laminate peel that hardly even registers, only even noticed it when I was finger checking it for smoothness, the surface unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on the back edge, the front is closed and factory machine cut.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, a natural central line always forms on this and similar format gatefolds that have a raised central hinge. The text is unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, any sinkage into the central recess mild and is still easily read. Spines like this often partially shed, or even in some cases fully shed the laminte, so to find this still fully intact and strong is unusual.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A highly impressive all-round example of this classic late 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an impressive fully intact and polylined Harvest promotional inner sleeve with little to fault bar the usual darkening of the paper and seam edge adhesive. Hardly creased with all edges solid with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks light and mostly faint as seen critically under bright light. Side two has a fine line mark that does nothing, any tiny blemishes that cause any contact sound few at all. Viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat overlooked vintage Deep Purple album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – a tiny few gentle ticks on side one come and go fast and little else overall. This is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises, this important on an album with some quiet passages and the orchestral segment of the final song especially. With so few blemishes or unwanted sounds, this is the very best example of this album I have heard and it proved a very enjoyable play-grade. Few available copies will outperform this genuine first pressing I feel sure – most that surface are later EMI credit copies that sold as the band became popular and famous. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly and has been very well stored and mainly carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely, but quite challenging record. It is likely to prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. This my first issue of this in years.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
