DECCA SXL 2239 WBGv ED1 – All Time Popular Favourites – VPO KNAPPERTSBUSCH

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

RECORD GRADING

VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT

Both sides of this record are clean and there are few spindle marks on the labels. It is a very early recording.

The Matrix numbers are 4813-2E and 4814-1E and the run-off Stampers are the earliest a “1” and a “B”

This is almost an entirely excellent record but for one fault. Across the first band of side 1 there is a scratch, about an inch long, which does sound. It produces 4 periods of repetitive clicks/pops during the first 5 minutes of the side. Initially for just over a minute there are light then slightly louder clicks; after a break it does the same again three more times for between 30 and 45 seconds each time. The sounds are clicks or ticks, not loud, startling pops. I have included a photograph of the scratch. Its effect on the sound is not as great as one might perhaps expect having viewed it.

Thereafter, the remainder of the side plays quite excellently with almost no surface noise at all other than a very, very occasional random light tick

Side 2, which is almost unmarked save for some light sleeve rubbings, again plays excellently with little surface noise; just 4 pops at the very beginning of band 2 and another 5 about a minute later

The sound quality on this record is superb

COVER GRADING

VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT

The cover is also almost excellent. It is undamaged; the corners are hardly even scuffed and there is only a little soiling of the back. As can be seen in the photograph, however, the top binding strip has been secured at some time with sticky tape which has ‘browned’ with age. This apart, it is an excellent cover

The blue FFSS inner sleeve is clean, undamaged, lightly creased and only a little age discoloured
