But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter? (1992) marked a new era in Death In June's sound. While older Death In June material had a harder industrial edge to it that made it strongly reminiscent of the band's contemporary compatriots Joy Division, it is the acoustic-derived 'apocalyptic folk' sound of But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter? for which the band is best known today (this has a lot to do with the fact that Douglas Pearce's main collaborator on this album is David Tibet of Current 93...).
Whereas older Death In June albums are more tumultuous in tone, this one is calmer and more contemplative. Folk guitar, restrained but effective vocals, additions of keyboards, occasional trumpet (on 3 tracks), complete with dark and intellectually provoking lyrics. The music and the lyrics are quite personal in tenor, but Pearce's vocal composure puts enough distance between the music and the listener to assure that the album does not go for cheap sentimentality or play on simple emotional cues.
It's folk noir/dark folk/neo-folk/apocalyptic folk/whatever you wish to call it. But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter? is, without a doubt, the definitive Death In June acoustic masterpiece, one of these extremely rare albums that sound apocalyptic, bleak and beautiful all at the same time.
