ich sortiere gerade meine Vinyl-Sammlung und muss mich von der ein oder anderen Indie Platte trennen. Hier eine extrem rare Doppel Live LP von der australischen Kult-Indie-Band DEAD CAN DANCE im guten Zustand (Labels teilweise mit Kugelschreiber beschrieben), mit dem Titel TOWARD THE WITHIN, aus dem Jahr 1994, auf dem Label 4AD. Um die fünf Stunden dauert der Soundcheck, bevor die australischen Klangmagier Dead Can Dance zu einem ihrer seltenen Auftritte die Bühne betreten. Das Livealbum "Towand The Within" zeigt, warum. Der an zwei Abenden im Mayfair Theatre von Santa Monica (Kalifornien) aufgezeichnete Mitschnitt bietet einen exemplarischen Standard. Glasklar und konturenscharf ist das Klangbild, exakte Staffelung der Instrumente inklusive. Gerade richtig austariert wurden die Halleffekte: nicht zu viel, nicht zu wenig. Wer das Duo schon einmal live erlebt hat, weiß um die eigenartige Konzertatmosphäre: halb weihevoller Gottesdienst, halb pittoresker Schwarzkittelauftrieb. E-Musik und Subkultur gehen hier eine seltene und für manchen bizarr anmutende Verbindung ein. Diese Stimmung prägt auch "Toward The Within": hier die vergeistigte Lisa Gerrard, die als eine Art Hohepriesterin zu ihrer Gemeinde predigt, dort der zurückgenommene, aber keinen Deut weniger eindrucksvoll agierende Brendan Perry. Auch in der grundverschiedenen Intonation dokumentiert sich die Ungleichheit dieses außergewöhnlichen Paares. Gerrards gurgelnde Kehlkopfakrobatik und ihre oktavenüberspringen den Eskapaden kontert Perry mit trauerumflortem Sprechgesang. Die fünfköpfige Band spielt dazu eine komplexe, perkussionsdominierte "World Music", die Elemente aus dem Nahen Osten, Nordafrika und dem Balkan miteinander verbindet. Ein Leckerbissen selbst für Dead-Can-Dance-Fortgeschrittene ist die Repertoirezusammenstellung. Lediglich vier bereits veröffentlichte Songs gibt es hier, dem stehen elf neue Titel gegenüber.

Das erste Live-Album von Dead can Dance setzte in vielerlei Hinsicht Maßstäbe und hängt die Meßlatten auch heute noch sehr hoch.

Auf dem vermeintlichen Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere angekommen, fragte sich die treue Fan-Gemeinde ob ein Live-Album von Dead can Dance funktionieren kann. Schließlich hört man gebannt und andächtig zu und wagte in den Konzerten keinerlei Störungen durch spontanen Beifall oder Jubel - Dead can Dance wurde fast spirituell verehrt.

Und dann kam es doch: Die umjubelte Tour von 1993 wurde unter dem Titel "Toward the Within" als CD und LP veröffentlicht. Auch noch fast 30 Jahre später sage ich: Ein Glücksfall für mehr als die Fan-Gemeinde, nämlich für alle Liebhaber excellenter Musik, die in keine Kategorie passt und getragen wird von zwei großartigen Künstlern und ihrer Begleitband.
Zwei Dinge fallen sofort beim Hören auf. Da ist zunächst die akustische Set-List, die zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung nur vier bekannte Titel aufwies (von insgesamt 15). Das war (und ist auch heute noch) ungewöhnlich für ein Live-Album. Zum anderen ist die Live-Atmosphäre ungewöhnlich (siehe oben) aber dennoch sehr gelungen eingefangen - die einzelnen Titel werden vollkommen ungestört vom Publikum (sonderbar für eine Live-Darbietung; findet man sonst nur in Klassik-Konzerten) gespielt. Dafür ist zwischen den Stücken der Beifall umso frenetischer.

Die Musik kann man nur als großartig, ja fast singulär bezeichnen. Einen derartigen Mix aus orientalisch angehauchten Stücken mit viel exotischer Percussion (Rakim, Oman, Desert Song), Songwriting für Gitarre (I can see now, American Dreaming, Don't fade away), Lisa Gerrards Gesangskunst (Persian Love song, The Wind that shakes the Barley, Sanvean) und weiterer Hits für die Ewigkeit (Yulunga, Cantara) abgerundet von eher experimentellen Stücken und Solointerpretationen hat es auf einem Album bis heute nicht mehr gegeben.

Die Aufnahme kann man getrost als audiophilen Maßstab bezeichnen. Auflösung, Luftigkeit und Trennschärfe suchen seinesgleichen. Wer die Möglichkeit (und das entsprechende Equipment) hat, sollte unbedingt zur japanischen Hybrid-SACD greifen - hier zeigt das Medium einmal mehr, wieviel Klanggewinn aus ohnehin schon excellenten Aufnahmen noch herausgeholt werden kann.

Alles in allem: Ein Konzert für die Ewigkeit in perfekter Aufnahmetechnik - eher 6 als 5 Sterne!

This live album is stunning. I find it hard listening to the studio albums after hearing the performances on this: they practically all outperform the recorded versions. There are so many magical pieces on this album - tracks such as Rakim, American Dreaming, Yulunga and Cantara (and Cantara is especially epic!) are all highly energetic and wonderful, while songs such as Don't Fade Away, Sanvean and I Am Stretched On Your Grave are more melancholic and pensive.

If you have never listened to Dead Can Dance before, an album like this would be a good place to start. There's a broad overview of many of their different styles (except I sense a lack of their medieval-sound outside of Song of the Sibyl, which is glorious). While I *think* I prefer their more recent live album - In Concert, this one is definitely worth buying.

You will not find any other artist which are like what Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry had (and more recently have) going. There is a hugely diverse and colourful mix of historic and ethnic influences, and one blog post I read summed it up quite well - "Gaelic folk, Gregorian chant, African polyrhythm, Mediaeval dirges and Middle Eastern flavourings".

Needless to say, both Gerrard's and Perry's performances are effectively flawless, and provide a nice contrast to each other; Lisa's vocals (she sings (mostly) in her own idioglossia) are often long, ethereal and beautiful, while Brendan's sound more grounded here on earth, as he sings in a wonderfully deep and hypnotic way.

For me, the two standout tracks on this record would be Cantara, as the forcefulness of Lisa's vocals go beyond the studio version's so much so that the track is almost unrecognisable in comparison; by the end of the performance you will be stunned, and Sanvean. This performance in particular of Sanvean is beyond anything I could describe with words. It literally leaves me frozen in my chair whenever I listen. It's sublime.

If you've never heard this group's music before, it may take a while to get in to; it did for me. However, it is SO worth the wait if you do, as the more you explore DCD's exciting discography, the more you find hidden gems and songs that just speak to you more on the second listen than they did on the first. Along with Loreena McKennitt and one or two others, DCD are my favourite artists in music.
