THE DEAD BOYS - YOUNGER, LOUDER, AND SNOTTYER - Necrophila Record - France - NECRO 1 - 1989 - pink vinyl
Guitar-heavier, raw-er rough mixes of the classic first DEAD BOYS LP, released in 1989 on a French label and later re-issued on BOMP! in the late 90s. The subtitle says: "yo!!! … more balls den da original!!!" There's an added live version of "Search and Destroy" (recorded in SF, 1977.)
These are, according to liner notes from Stiv Bators himself, the rough mixes made for the band after tracking by Bob Clearmountain: It was recorded over a cassette copy of Quadrophenia by the Who. Ten years later, I was about to tape over this cassette, thinking it was the Who… Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!!! The MIX everyone had forgotten. I played it for the DEAD BOYS. They were shocked, pissed off, and felt cheated! This was how we sounded - LIVE!! In further investigation, no one saved a copy of this mix - no one!! "Stick this in your ear," he adds. "If it's too loud, you're too old!"
Indeed. If true, and this was really mastered from a taped over cassette, I have to say it sounds pretty darn good. And it does have more "balls," that is to say, guitars, and is generally raw-er. I always feel my hand instinctively reaching for the invisible guitar faders when I listen to rock and roll, and Young, Loud, and Snotty is no exception, so it works for me. Some of the mixes are actually quite a bit different (e.g. "I Need Lunch.")
The colored vinyl is NM and plays great, with a bit of surface noise and the occasional ambient tic typical for colored vinyl; the cover has some rubbed edges and slightly bumped corners; inner sleeve is wrinkled on one corner.
