I found out about De Facto after really getting into the Mars Volta, I found out it was a side project of Omar Alfredo Rodriguez-Lopez (guitarist in TMV, bassist in De Facto), Cedric Bixler Zavala (vocalist in TMV, drummer in De Facto), Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (keyboardist in TMV and De Facto, except here you can actually hear him) and the late Jeremy Ward (former sound manipulator of TMV and De Facto, until he died of a heroin overdose in 2002) after Omar and Cedric left ATD-I over creative differences within the band. They wanted to do something different, and with the Mars Volta they did just that, but De Facto is the lesser known gem that does another completely different kind of different if that makes any sense. This is dub at it's best. With the instrumental skill of Omar, Cedric and Ikey (and also John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on some of the tracks) and the experimental desire of Jeremy, this makes for a really interesting sound, and if you have heard the Mars Volta you will know that these guys love indulging in wierd sounds. With their debut album "How Do You Dub? You Fight For Dub. You Plug Dub In." being slightly dissapointing, I decided to download this to see if it was any better. I was greatly surprised as it blew me away, even though it did take a few listens to get into. Stand out moments are "El Professor Contra De Facto", "Cordova" and "Rodche Defects", however the rest of the album is brilliant too. Worth a listen. However, due to the death of Jeremy (who played a key part in De Facto) and the Mars Volta almost instantaneously growing in poularity, they haven't been able to do much with this, which is a real shame and their music has become very rare (especially their latest album "Legende Du Scorpion A Quatre Queues" (translated as "Legend Of The Four Tailed Scorpion") which is sheer brilliance, but is incredibly hard to find) so grab the chance while you can. Megaton Shotblast is a very solid album and is good for people just getting into them. Get some De Facto in your life and buy this album!
