Sunday In Heaven
I needed something like a mantra I could repeat to myself, the more I sing it the more I'll believe it," Zella Day says in the notes to her second album. "It's up to us to decide whether or not we are going to let certain challenges define our lives." It's not hard to hear what she means, either. Sunday In Heaven, the difficult second, is a resolutely personal record that sees the artist sticking a flag in the ground to claim not just a sound but a feeling that's entirely hers.
Context might help with such bold statements. Having been writing songs since she was around eight years old, Day's debut, Kicker, arrived to unsurprising critical acclaim: a remarkably mature work. Sunday In Heaven threatens to cast that aside, offering expansive and hypnotic indie rock ('Radio Silence'), heart-wrenching, show-stopping country-esque balladry ('Bunny'), theatrical guitar pop ('I Don't Know How To End') and, of course, that voice.
