Description
This auction is for a DAVY JONES -- GIRL / RAINY JANE GREEN COLORED VINYL '45 RECORD ! This single was released in 2012 by Friday Music on the BELL Records label.
Davy did release "Girl" on an album entitled "Daydream Believin' (Time Tested Hits & Rarities) in 2004, but that was a live version. I believe a 1990s grunge version was on "The Brady Bunch Movie" AND "A Very Brady Sequel" soundtracks (both, for some reason).
Bell Records did release a single back in 1971, but that version was for the Sandy Duncan movie "Star Spangled Girl" had slightly different lyrics. This 2012 pressing MAY be the same version from 1971. Please correct me if I'm wrong. (I tried comparing the 1971 single from the movie with the original Brady Bunch broadcast, and I swear the backing track for BB version is at a faster tempo than the single. His vocal still sounds like it's in the same key though.)
It was on the Friday Music compact disc in 2012 entitled "Davy Jones: The BELL Recordings (1971-72)" as a bonus track. Most recently it was released on vinyl as a bonus track on the 7A Records label album "Davy Jones: The Bell Records Story" from 2024.
"Girl" should have been released back in 1971 the week before it first appeared on The Brady Bunch! PURE POP! It possibly could have been a hit just by Davy appearing on the season 3, episode 12 of "The Brady Bunch". A lost opportunity. Maybe the music buying public was all Monkeed-out by 1971...
From what I can see, the GREEN vinyl version was released first in June of 2012, with a RED vinyl repressing done in September 2012
I purchased this '45 new back in 2012 from Rhino Records (I still had it in the original shipping box). It was never played, and I did not play-test it. It comes in a nice color picture sleeve, which is also housed in a heavy plastic sleeve. I only took it out to take the pictures. So whatever you hear or see is how I received it back in 2012. Needless to say, this has been long out-of-print.
Oh yes...of note! There are inscriptions on the the inner groove on both sides. On side-A it says "R.I.P. Davey Jones" (and yes, that's how they spelled his first name here). On the B-side it says "For Davy and His Horses".
