THIS REALLY IS A STUNNING, ORIGINAL UK FIRST PRESSING OF A TREMENDOUS (AND RARE) LP AND IN ALL HONESTY I THINK A FINER COPY WOULD BE VERY HARD TO LOCATE INDEED
One of the most eclectic guitarists of the 1960s, Graham's mixture of folk, blues, jazz, Middle Eastern sounds, and Indian ragas was an important catalyst of the British folk scene. Like Sandy Bull and John Fahey -- two folk-based guitarists with a similar taste for genre-bending experimentation -- Graham could not be said to be a rock musician. But like Bull and Fahey, he shared the eagerness of the '60s psychedelic rockers to stretch out and incorporate unpredictable influences into his music.
"Folk, Blues & Beyond" is Graham's most groundbreaking and consistent album. More than his solo debut The Guitar Player (which was pretty jazzy) or his previous collaboration with folk singer Shirley Collins, Folk Roots, New Routes, this established his mixture of folk, jazz, blues, and Middle Eastern music, the use of a bassist and drummer also hinting at (though not quite reaching) folk-rock. "Leavin' Blues," "Skillet (Good'n'Greasy)," and "Moanin'" are all among his very best folk-blues-rock performances, while on "Maajun" he goes full-bore into Middle Eastern music on one of his most haunting and memorable pieces. Covers of traditional folk standards like "Black Is the Colour of My True Love's Hair" and "Seven Gypsies" combine with interpretations of compositions by Bob Dylan ("Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"), Willie Dixon ("My Babe"), Charles Mingus ("Better Git in Your Soul"), and Reverend Gary Davis ("Cocaine") for an eclecticism of repertoire that wasn't matched by many musicians of any sort in the mid-'60s.
Track Listing:
Side 1: Leaving' Blues / Cocaine / Sally Free and Easy / Black is the Colour of my True Loves Hair / Rock Me Baby / Seven Gypsies / Ballad of the Sad Young Men / The Moanin'
Side 2: Skillet (Good n' Greasy) / Ain't Nobody's Business What I Do / Maajun (A Taste of Tangier) / I Can't Keep from Crying Sometimes / Don't Think Twice It's Alright / My Babe / Goin' Down Slow / Better Git in Your Soul
LABELS: The labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with NO marks/writing and only moderate spindles
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces have their original DEEP, almost LIKE-NEW GLOSSY SHEEN. There are one or two (extremely) light superficial surface marks but these have NO audio consequence. Visually EXCELLENT+
VINYL Audio: The audio reproduction is absolutely STUNNING - CRYSTAL CLEAR, SHARP, CRISP and VIBRANT. There are NO scratches, NO clicks/pops, NO jumps, NO sticks, and NO surface noise AT ALL. JUST ABOUT AS GOOD AS IT GETS AND I THINK A FINER COPY WOULD BE VERY HARD TO LOCATE INDEED. The LP plays to an impressively high standard with NO groove-wear and NO distortion and must be very critically graded NEAR MINT for audio if not actually better as the playback is FLAWLESS. NOT over-graded in ANY way as I use STRICT RECORD COLLECTOR grading standards (please refer to my feedback and 'about me' page)
SLEEVE: The 1st issue sleeve is also in BEAUTIFUL condition. CLEAN, FRESH and BRIGHT with a BEAUTIFUL DEEP GLOSS to the front laminated surface and a CLEAN, UNMARKED back. There is NO wear to the edges and only a couple of light creases to the spine and some small half-moon creases to the laminate at the opening edge. All text on the spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) is SHARP and CLEAR. An amazingly well preserved 45 year old sleeve. EXCELLENT+
