The great Miles Davies released his Round About Midnight album on Columbia in 1957. The title song was written by composer Thelonious Monk and was performed with an all star band at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival. Davis's solo work stood out and won plenty of audits, including those of George Avakian of Columbia Records. who decided to sign him off the back of it. The album was his debut for the label and featured John Coltrane on sax. It was critically acclaimed and noted for its excellent execution and stylish sounds.
