There's a reason Betty Davis still sounds faintly dangerous half a century later. Plenty of artists have borrowed bits of her swagger since, though very few carry the same sense that the whole thing might derail at any moment. Back in 1974, this stuff must have sounded completely unhinged.'Shoo-B-Doop and Cop Him' arrives snarling through greasy funk riffs and unapologetically filthy innuendo, then 'He Was A Big Freak' somehow manages to sound both hilarious and genuinely threatening at once. Elsewhere, 'Don't Call Her No Tramp' swings with hard-eyed confidence, and '70's Blues' slows the pace just enough to reveal how much rawness sat underneath all the bravado. The album, even now, feels miles removed from the tidier corners of 70s r&b and funk. You can hear Prince, Rick James and plenty more picking through the wreckage years later.
