DAVID COPE
NAVAJO DEDICATIONS: MODERN MUSIC BASED ON NAVAJO CEREMONIES LP
Folkways Records
with insert
Very rare Folkways album presenting 4 works of american composer David Cope representing his research in the Navajo people and in particular to their Ritual Ceremonies.
Some info on the release: Original released back in 1976. Released by the Folkways records label (John Cage, David Tudor, Ilhan Mimaroglu, Henry Jacobs, Tod Dockstader, Barton McLean and Gianni Safred, Barton Smith, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Travelon Gamelon, Malcolm Goldstein, Philip Corner). This 1976 release by David Cope presents modern music based on Cope’s intensive research into—and respect for—Navajo ceremonies, and Navajo music in particular. Ranging from pieces for tape to large chamber ensemble to a work scored for a single performer, the four compositions are unique interpretations of Native American Indian myths and culture. The liner notes include detailed explanations of the inspiration, organization, and arrangement of each of these complex works.
David Cope is a composer/author/computer scientist whose work has been performed throughout the world. His work on algorithmic compositional techniques and procedures, as well as his published works on the subject, are landmarks in the field. Cope is Professor Emeritus at the University of California at Santa Cruz where he teaches theory and composition, and Honorary Professor of Computer Science at Xiamen University (China). He also teaches regularly at the annual Workshop in Algorithmic Computer Music (WACM) held in June and July at UC Santa Cruz. Following early study on piano (including an extensive performance career) and violoncello, he completed degrees in composition at Arizona State University and the University of Southern California, studying with George Perle, Halsey Stevens, Ingolf Dahl and Grant Fletcher. His over seventy published compositions have received thousands of performances throughout the U.S. and abroad. Ensembles which have performed his works include the Vermont, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Cabrillo Festival, and Santa Cruz Symphony Orchestras, as well as numerous university orchestras and wind ensembles. Twenty-one of Cope's works appear on recordings. These include: Variations (piano and wind orchestra; Cornell University), Re-Birth (concert band), Concert (piano and orchestra, Mary Jane Cope, soloist), and Threshold and Visions (orchestra). Quite close to Lejaren Hiller, Roger Reynolds, Alvin Lucier and of course David Behrman, Larry Austin, Jerry Hunt, Glenn Branca, Bruce Haack, Phil Niblock, Charlemagne Palestine, Noah Creshevsky and Charles Dodge. Complete albums of his music have appeared on Folkways (2), Opus One and Discant Records and include a wide range of works from large ensembles to soloists with electronic and computer-generated tape.
Condition: Cover lies in mint- condition, quite well preserved - like new (see photo). Vinyl lies in excellent condition, showing to be very clean and plays better than most Folkways pressings (that in general were of poor quality), but still with some surface noise at the first minutes of side a:.
