Description

THE DRESS / DRAG COVER.

This is an ORIGINAL 1971 English release of Bowie`s masterpiece THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD on the MERCURY record label.

As all you record collectors know this shows up now and then on eBay but in condition like this we all know it is,  RARE! RARE!! RARE!!!

Due chiefly to the fact that by nature this particular sleeve is quite delicatly made,it was made of thin stock unlike the 69 LP or Hunky Dory or Diamond Dogs which are all made of the thick card stock used of the day.So for this reason very few are around in acceptable condition let alone OUTSTANDING condition like this . THIS RARE OLDIE LOOKS BRAND NEW !!!

I grade the sleeve as a very strong MINT- .

Please understand my camera and I are well below average and these shots in no way capture the true quality and beauty of this item .

Face to face , the sleeve is beautifully clean and it feels and looks as new ! The colours on the front of the sleeve are very bright as is all the writing on the sleeve.

The spine on the sleeve is in IMMACULATE CONDITION with no fading and none of the writing missing at all , and the spine has never been crushed inbetween other albums (a commom flaw in Dress covers) really , its in superb shape .

The back of this sleeve is as important as the front and in this case the back sleeve is TOTALLY SUPERB !!!

The record is as good as the sleeve and again a very strong MINT- the vynil has retained its high lustre sheen and it has only a couple of small hairlines but they cannot be detected by playing the disc in any way at all and it plays flawlessly.I can only count a couple of spindle marks on the labels and its my guess this record has been played no more than half a dozen times. The record is also in SUPERB CONDITION.

Heres proof that this great piece is the real thing and not one of the two forgerys that exist .

1)The counterfeit has a sheeny texture to it , the original has a matt texture which is more defined . The colours on the counterfeit are much paler like the EMI/Rycodisc who amazingly used the fake for their artwork !

2)The clock on the right side of the sleeve is hardly there on the counterfeit and the original more than half the clock is there , this is the usual method in telling the two apart .

3)The counterfeits back cover is very pale , again the original has a much more defined grey.

4) On the fake Bowies foot goes right to the edge of the sleeve on the original theres a centimetre or more sleeve.

5)The inner sleeve is white on the forgery and grey on the original and im talking about the ACTUAL sleeve (not the paper inner sleeve).

6)The label on the counterfeit is a lighter shade of black than the original and the typeset is taller and thinner than the original , it also has a circled `R`  instead of the propper `P`, other than that its a very good effort.

7)The matrix on the runout groove is larger on the fake not so well stamped and omits 420 from the numbers and faces the label rather than pointing away from it as on the original.

8)The spine has Mercury, title and cat number running from right to left on the counterfeit whereas on the original its left to right (this is if you hold the cover face up!).

So rest assured this is THE REAL THING .

When your contemplating buying a collectors piece like this heres some advice...

CONDITION ,CONDITION,CONDITION.

And condition like this is near impossible to find , if you let this get away it will be a long , long time before condition like this comes your way again , so why settle for less ???

If you already own a dress cover chances are its not of superior quality like this ,so why not win this , sell yours , and grade up !!!

If you require any more info or pictures dont hessitate to ask .

SLEEVE AND RECORD IN AS CLOSE TO MINT AS YOU ARE EVER LIKELY TO FIND and isnt condition like this worth that extra bid ?

There is another dress cover up for sale and indeed it ends a few hours after this one .

Well , thats just eBay isnt it ?

The thing is , this other seller has copied my description virtually word for word !

The other dress cover is a fine example of how damaged these dress covers get over the years ,look at the front top right corner of the other sellers sleeve you will see a definate and long crease that the seller has tried to hide with tricky photography .Also on the back of the other sellers dress cover about four inches from the top (right hand side) you can clearly see a circular brown stain (looks like someones put there coffee cup on the sleeve ) .Also on the back of the other guys dress cover on Bowies right cheek there seems to be a dot a bit like a beauty spot ???

If your gonna have a go at winning the other guys dress cover ask for specific close ups of these areas....hmm,  I bet !

Over the last 23 years ive been lucky enough to have 18 of these rareties pass through my hands (probly explains why my listing has been so blatently copied).

Of them all , this IS THE BEST ONE IVE SEEN  BY FAR !

If you need any other pictures of any part of my dress cover ,from any angle  just ask , your more than welcome, im hiding nothing !

As ive said earlier my photography and camera leave a lot to be desired .This sleeve is much more impressive than it is in these pictures .

Also as ive said ealier , with this item condition is everything !
