Description

Mega Rare Genuine 1971 UK 1st Pressing of 'The Man Who Sold The World' with Mega Rare Drag Cover!!! One of the Rarest UK Bowie Albums You Will Ever See!!!

Here is another gem from my own UK 1st Press collection (which I am selling off gradually to lessen the pain...) I have been collecting very rare vinyl for a long time now. As a collector, I have been very critical about the condition and rarity of the records I have chosen to buy over the years, and only selected the most pristine 1st pressings I have found.  My collection is therefore filled with not only the rarest UK 1st pressings, Demo's and oddities, but also records of the highest grade quality condition, some of the best you will probably ever come across. Sadly, most now have to find new homes.  They don't come any rarer than this album. You are about to bid on the hugely rare TRUE ORIGINAL 'Drag Sleeve' UK 1st pressing of Bowies most infamous record - 'The Man Who Sold The World'. This is considered by most as the holy grail of Bowie's UK pressings. It is a massively rare record!!! However, before I begin my description, a word of warning... Although this is a fully guaranteed genuine UK 1st pressing, because of the very rare status of this record, there are many counterfeit copies on the market today. I recently saw a fake TMWSTW sold on eBay for $661 USD!!! Please be careful when purchasing a copy of this record. These fakes are fairly easy to spot when you know what to look for... Below I have listed a few key points to look out for when buying a copy of this record...

1. The original sleeve has a 'matt' feel to it. The fake has a shiny texture with much paler colours

2. The inside of the jacket is a grey colour on the original - on the fake it is white

3. The front picture is very telling. There is basically another 1cm of picture on the right side of the original cover. For instance, on the original, the square picture/clock on the right of the sleeve has over half the face visible. On the counterfeit cover, the clock is usually not visible or only just visible. Secondly, Bowie's foot goes right to the edge of the cover on the counterfeit, but on the original cover there is another cm or so of sleeve left.

4. The Mercury label also has some key features to look for. Importantly the original has a circled (P) next to the date. The counterfeit has an (R) circled next to the date. The typeset on the counterfeit is also different, it appears taller with the actual labels being a lighter shade of black than the original.

I hope that helps, most sellers honestly declare that the are selling repro copies, but it really bugs me when people try to pass off counterfeit TMWSTW as original pressings. Please rest assured, what you are bidding on here is a 100% genuine 1971 UK 1st pressing. I have included lots of photos of the key points worth looking for, still, if there is anything you are not sure about, please email me and I'll only be too happy to help. Good Luck!

The Cool matt textured Mercury centre labels are in great condition!!! There are NO Tears, NO Scribbles. NO lifting or Bubbling and NO unwanted writing of any kind to the centre labels - there is just some spindle lines, with one long spindle line on side 2!!! Copies of this LP only turn up today completely worn out with lots of scratches and gouges - this one is not!!! It has a beautiful shine and that 'just pressed' look and feel. There are a few hairlines which in no way effect the playing by causing any nasty skips or jumps!!! This record easily grades as Very Good+ even by our own strict grading standards (most would grade much higher). The very rare 1st press 'withdrawn' sleeve is in respectable condition! Although I have not come across many of these sleeves before I can only guess the few remaining ones are in pretty bad shape and look like they would have suffered with heavy ring wear and heavy seam/corner wear problems. This sleeve was never laminated and has that textured feel, similar to the original 'Aqualung' by Jethro Tull, so perhaps unsurprisingly, there is some wear present.  The spine however, is nice and sharp with perfectly legible spine text. It shows moderate to heavy seam and corner wear, and and has the faintest trace of a stamp on the back (virtually invisible), but there is no seam splitting etc, it is only really superficial wear.  It has NO unwanted writing or scribbling. This sleeve must grade as Very Good. Not mint by any means, but it is the rarity value of this record that is most of interest in this case. All in all a perfectly acceptable example of a very rare record. I have tried to show you the record from all angles - there's nothing to hide!!! If you are not sure of anything just email me - I will be happy to help. Don't underestimate the rarity of this LP - finding a UK 1st press of this LP in this kind of condition is impossible today!!! Good Luck!!!

I will be selling my entire UK 1st Press collection of 1960/70's Psych/Prog./Beat/Rock & Folk over the coming months, most of these records are in Mint- condition, many having 3 figure book prices. We always combine postage so if you win more than 1 auction you save money on postage costs! A little note about insurance - Please read carefully... If the value of your record(s) is over £30, your invoice will include an insured option. Being the responsible adults you are, it is entirely up to you to take this up  - we strongly advise you to do this but will not hassle you about it. You either add the required insurance or you don't. If you do add the required insurance and your record is lost/damaged, you will get a refund. If you don't add the required insurance and your record is lost/damaged, you will not get a refund. Can we be any clearer? I think not.

Refunds & Feedback ... Please read this carefully ... We try to give you the best quality examples of rare records available. However, there will always be somebody out there whose expectations far exceed UK record collector grading standards.  If you are in anyway unsatisfied with your record or our grading of it please refer to the UK Record Collector Grading Chart very carefully BEFORE emailing us. We strictly adhere to it and will only offer refunds (minus the postage AND our eBay costs) if we are satisfied that we have fallen below UK record collector grading standards. This will very rarely, if ever, happen. We will not be impressed with buyers disputing our gradings without even bothering to check the UK record collector grading standards chart first - you have been warned ...

Buyers who continually Haggle, Whine and Moan to try to decrease the price they won their auctions for will be blocked from bidding on future auctions and can toodle off down to HMV or Virgin where they can harass the counter staff there.

We will always leave feedback upon receipt of feedback. In an ideal world we would like to leave feedback as soon as the record has been shipped but due to feedback blackmail in the past (i,e, ",,,I want a partial refund or I will leave negative feedback") we have opted to take this measure. Contact must be made within 3 days of winning the auction. If payment has not been received after 10 days a non paying bidder alert will be placed. If payment is then not received within 7 days Negative feedback WILL be left and the buyer WILL be given a strike by eBay. Thanks for reading.
