SERIOUSLY RARE AND HUGELY SORT AFTER.
To me this is one of the heaveyweights in terms of collectable records. Its the whole thing with this album , the record, the sleeve ,the subject matter ...Bowie in a satin dress.It just adds hugely to the artistic aura that surrounds this enigmatic and iconic and contraversial sleeve . The mistakes like Tony Visconti spelled TONNY on the label . Woody Woodmansey spelled Woodmansly on the back of the sleeve . Bowie thought this was the final straw in unprofessionalism so did everything to get out of his Philips Mercury Vertigo record contract . All contoverseys surround this mysterious LP . All serious record collectors should own a dress cover . They just dont make em like this any more .
This original textured sleeve is very flimsy and delicately made so many of these that survived are in pretty bad condition.Suffering from chronic wringware and are torn really easy . So this one stands up very well .
This sleeve has no rips no tares and no handwriting anywhere on the item . It has a very minimal ammount of wringware visable if you double click the pictures . Both the front and back of this LP are looking very bright and clean which is so unusuall for this item . Double click the pictures and see how bright and vibrant the Blues and the Golds are on Bowies Dress , and on the LP title THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD are . Rare like this ! The spine has been worn and you can only make out partial pieces of the spinal writings but it isnt ripped just much of the writing has been rubbed away . So id list the sleeve as a very concervative Verry Good ++ .
The magnificent silver and black MERCURY record labels are beautifully clean with no damage at all other than the expected spinal ware .
The records have a few hairline and paper scuffs but that dosent matter because the record plays superbly . There is one 4mm mark on one of the tracks but it had no baring on the playing of the song and it played entirely from start to finish with no problems at all . The records do still retain a mirror like high lustre sheen (Double click the pictures) . I would say the record is Exellent and it plays Exellent also .
The correct poly lined patents pending inner sleeve is intact and present.
Due to the collectabillity of this high prized record , this item has been forged twice .
Once in 83 by the Italians , and in 1978 the Japanese made an exellent forgery of this hugely desired LP so I will only explain away the Jap forgey. The Italian fake Mr Magoo would be able to tell .
Here are a few pointers to differentiate the original from the fake .
1) The counterfeit cover has a sheeney texture to it,the original has a matt texturewhich is more defined. The colours on the counterfeit or much paler like the EMI/Rycodiscwho used the counterfeit for their artwork!
2) BOWIEs foot goes all the way to the right side very edge of the sleeve on the forgery on the original it goes about 15mm from the edge . This is the usuall method in telling them appart.
3) The counterfeits back cover is very pale again the original is much more defined.
4) The inner of the sleeve is white on the forgery and grey on the original and im talking about the actual sleeve and not the paper inner sleeve!
5) The label on the Fake is a lighter shade of black than the original , also the typeset on the counterfeit is thinner and taller , it also has an "R" circled near the date 1971 rather than the propper "P" as on the original . Other than that this Jap forgery is very good!
6) The matrix on the runout groove is larger on the counterfeit , not so well stamped and omits 420 from the numbers. Aditinally the matrix faces the label rather than pointing away from it as on the original .
So rest assured this the ultrarare original .
Condition like this is rare .
