Label Conditions: Both practically as-made. Fresh, very clean and attractive with barely even a hint of any spindle traces. Played once or twice only, and to reiterate the fact, this one still has a sliver of residue still attached to hole, detail like this is rarely seen on vintage records.

Rarity: Moderate, but often offered without the insert sheet. Also, and the most important factor, this copy is superbly well pressed and plays with fantastic audio quality – that never guaranteed (to say the least).

Brief Info: A fairly dark album from the Thin White Duke era. Station to Station started his new direction into a more ‘European’ sound, with use of synthesisers and electronic rhythms that leaned heavily towards German electronic music – Kraftwerk especially. From the very outset, the pounding electric rhythm is not dissimilar to Kraftwerk’s ‘Trans Europe Express’, issued a year earlier. This eventually led to his famous ‘Berlin Trilogy’ – Low, Heroes and Lodger. This was a fairly dark time for Bowie himself and this is somewhat reflected in these six longer songs. So less commercial, but it still sold quite well peaking at 5 in the UK album charts, and 3 in the United States. The album cover is a promotional still from the 1976 film ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’, starring Bowie himself. In 2003, the album was ranked number 323 in ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This a really lovely copy that plays little short of perfectly with a clean cover (that was protected from the one owner from new), and has the elusive insert sheet. This copy from the same lot I am currently offering, but this time, no ‘P’ initial anywhere.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better, this is one that seldom wears well. A single format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrodprint Ltd. Includes the original insert as seen in picture and the RCA text inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: More often seen very grubby and badly aged, this has minimal, gentle traces of discolouration and a small tip crease on the top left corner of the back. Any marks of blemishes apart are very few and ultra light and faint. A very gentle trace of rim impression being very critical. No writing or sticker issues, both front and back will prove very difficult to find better, and this one of the earliest copies made.

Top Edge:Straight with any discolouration very light with barely any wear. This has text ‘APL1-1327 STEREO’ text in a pale grey shade.

Bottom Edge: Superb, close to as-made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with almost zero hint of thickening. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, but quite thin, straight with any compression very little and light. All text is near perfect with any hint of rubbing minuscule, this is also superbly centred as-seen for good measure. Equally, hardly any surface rubs. Spines on this unforgiving cover are rarely seen better than this.

Corners: A small tip but on the spine top as mentioned, any others are tiny. Very fine but mostly excellent shape retained with no major knocks, any dinks minimal to light.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this unforgiving mid-1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive Bowie cover should please many, or even most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NO GRADE: due to it being dedicated, but in the most tasteful and important ways. It appears to be a gift and dated 1976. The actual date-code is 12/75 (December 1975), exactly when the album was manufactured for its early January 1976 release. It has the RCA text with two pristine window circles and unsplit edges with no repairs. Gently aged only with mild paper discolouration and some crease/crinkle near one corner. For actual wear only, I would grade this near excellent, the writing is purely subjective.

The Insert Sheet: PRACTICALLY MINT: printed on thick paper on one side only with a matt finish. Both sides are very clean, fresh with no creasing, all edges sharp, crisp with perfect corners. It has the correct APL1-1327 code and was printed and made in Great Britain also by Garrodprint Ltd, also guaranteed original. A really impressive example and still very white and even lacking tone spots or any ageing at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, this record has hardly been played. There is a pressing mark on side two, but it does nothing whatsoever (the first song on side two play-tested twice to be sure). So a natural visual blemish and nothing to do with any usage issue. In fact this record is probably the cleanest pressing of this album I have heard to date, it plays beautifully, alas, that is not always the case. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Also under light, gentle inner dulling is just visible, this as light as it ever gets and viewed normally, it barely registers either. This very careful owner placed his new records in brand new Decca inner sleeves for protection, and there they largely stayed undisturbed. I doubt if this record has seen light-of-day for decades. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, hardly any, and this on a label that could prove variable in pressing quality. Overall, an exceptional clean pressing for audio quality with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early, first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
