ULTRA RARE 1969 UK 1st PRESSING DEMO SINGLE

1969 UK 7" demonstration single PHILIPS (BF 1801) 45 rpm STEREO

Matrices: A SIDE 304201 1F//1 420 11 1 B SIDE S 304201 2F//1 420 1

Produced by Gus Dudgeon

THIS RECORD IS SERIOUSLY RARE! David Bowie's 1969 big hit was only originally issued by Philips as a MONO version in the UK. No STEREO copies of the commercial release have ever been found, but a tiny handful of stereo demos were pressed in the UK and distributed within the music trade. This is one of those copies, and was originally sent to the BBC for review purposes. It has remained in a box of seldom-played demonstration singles for 38 years.

This stereo version of 'Space Oddity' is the full un-edited 5 minutes and 14 seconds.

Unlike companies such as EMI or Decca, Philips records rarely had a 'Made in England' or 'Manufactured in Great Britain' credit on their labels. However, there is no possibility that this is a much more common Dutch (ref 704 201 BW) or Scandinavian pressing as the '420' in the matrix numbers is Philips' code for a UK pressing.

CONDITION: VINYL NEAR MINT- The unwarped vinyl is clean and bright with superb sound reproduction. The A Side has two light surface marks which do not sound. The B Side is virtually unmarked. LABELS NEAR MINT- The ridged three-prong circular push-out centre is strong and complete with minimal spindle marks. The grooved white paper labels are clean with clear black printing and a large red outline A on the A Side. SLEEVE EXCELLENT+ The white Philips company die-cut paper sleeve has blue printing and shows some typical light creasing but has no folds, splits, tears, stains or writing.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR ANY SERIOUS BOWIE FAN!

ABOUT ME: If you haven't done business with me before my name is Andy Hibberd and I own a "bricks and mortar" secondhand record shop called 101 COLLECTORS RECORDS in Farnham, Surrey, about one hour out of central London. I deal in old and collectable vinyl, CDs, DVDs and memorabilia in all musical genres, as well as new releases and re-issues. Please feel free to get in touch if you need any further information about this item, if you have any questions about what's currently in stock, or if you have a collection for sale and need some advice.

All photographs are of the actual item offered for sale: I never use 'stock' pictures or re-use old photos of previously sold stock.

All items are listed for 10 days, running from Thursdays to Sundays. If you wish to leave a message, or ask a question, please try to do so before the last Sunday as I try not to be in front of my laptop on my day off. Also, I always let my auctions run their full course, so please do not contact me asking if the item can be sold early. Live a little, enjoy the thrill of bidding.

Payment may only be made in UK £ Sterling: I accept PayPal, UK personal cheques (with bank guarantee card details) and most credit/debit cards. I cannot accept cash payments unless they are offered in person upon collection or delivery.

I am always happy to receive any wants-lists, but file them carefully on little bits of paper under slightly larger bits of paper that aren't always quite where they should be. I will guarantee to find what you want within minutes of you a) finding it elsewhere, b) deciding you can live without Venezuelan Death Metal after all, or c) losing the will to live.

Despite that, all my vinyl is strictly graded using the Record Collector RRPG system, and all goods are properly protected and posted in strong, new Covers 33 packaging. Please recycle the packing cardboard if possible - it might just offset the damage done when the item was originally manufactured. Alternatively, throw it away and set fire to a couple of tyres.

If you are bidding, please read all descriptions fully and take the time to read my Postage and Packaging costs and my Returns Policy. Certificates of Posting are obtained for all items despatched, without exception, but I can accept no liability for any items that may be lost or damaged in the post, although I will happily provide you with any necessary paperwork in the event of you claiming against Royal Mail. I always strongly recommend that you select the insured option for postage irrespective of the item's value.

Items selling for under £34 within the UK will be posted by the Royal Mail First Class service, unless insurance is requested, while items selling for £34 or above will ONLY be posted by the Special Delivery Next Day service, which will include insurance. Items selling for under £34 to customers abroad will be dispatched using the standard Airmail (Small Packets) service; for items selling at £34 or over I will ONLY use the Royal Mail International Signed For service, which will also include insurance equal to the selling price. If you are not prepared to pay for these postage charges then PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THIS ITEM.

Please read my Feedback comments and look at my past sales: I am not an anonymous internet seller but a responsible and contactable UK record dealer. You can bid with confidence.

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD BIDDING!
