Description
Scary Monsters is rightly regarded as one of the best albums that Bowie ever recorded. It was a success on every level: commercially, critically and artistically, and had four UK hit singles, including a number one (Ashes to Ashes) and a dance floor classic (Fashion). Yet it combined high levels of experimentation with superb lyrics which delved into the dark side of Bowie's psyche, examining his personal life and his past, and revisiting the familiar themes of alienation and fame.
Not only was it musically a triumph, but the motif of the album, the Pierrot clown character, is today probably one of the most recognisable of all Bowie's personas (Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, The Thin White Duke etc). The album's cover artwork is the best of his career: overlaying a grainy black and white photo with Edward Bell's dazzling painting, and reinforcing the retrospective concept with images torn from previous album covers.
After this Bowie changed direction, but Scary Monsters remained the benchmark against which all his subsequent releases were measured.
The whole concept is a masterpiece and Tony Visconti later said that both he and Bowie '. . . felt that we'd finally achieved our Sgt Pepper.'
Here I have an outstanding example of this incredible album. The whole thing is in superb condition and the audio is breath-taking in its clarity and detail.
This fabulous copy is one that every Bowie fan would want in their collection!
Detailed description
Vinyl: The vinyl looks superb and has retained its original high sheen with hardly a mark to be seen. It has clearly been very well cared for and rarely played. In normal light side one looks flawless and there is just one tiny (totally inaudible) surface mark near the start of side two. Even under bright, direct light, just a few whispy hairlines and fine sleeve-removal marks were visible, but there is nothing significant anywhere. I have played the entire record and it sounds fantastic with nothing to report. The whole album plays with outstanding depth and clarity, crisp stereo separation, perfect high-notes and deep, warm bass. The silent grooves are virtually silent and this outstanding pressing allows the listener to hear many detailed aspects of the recording that seem lost in subsequent digital re-issues (such as the superb multi-tracked backing vocal sequence at the end of the title track). This is a truly remarkable audio performance and I've never heard this amazing album sounding better than this. I would have no hesitation to play-grade the whole record as a VERY SAFE Near Mint (NM). I think it would be hard to find one that sounds better than this.
Labels: Both labels look superb with absolutely no signs of damage, writing, stickers etc and just light spindle marking, suggesting that the record has not been played very much.
Sleeve: The sleeve is really nice and clean with no damage, writing, splits, tears or stickers etc and just minor signs of age/use. Please see photos.
Edge wear: There is virtually no wear to the edges. The spine is solid and firm and the text is all 100% readable. There are just light signs of use at the opening.
Corner wear: minimal
Insert: No issues. Pretty much like new.
Detracting features not covered above: None. This is a superb example that would be hard to beat.
