Brief Info: Album number seven for Bowie and featuring his most famed backing band The Spiders from Mars. This was an album that featured cover songs and included the hit single ‘Sorrow’ – predictably, it sold well. Classics by The Who, Pink Floyd, The Kinks are featured amongst top songs from others. This is a supreme copy that plays superbly, the girl on the cover is 60s model Twiggy.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and includes the double sided insert sheet.

Cover Front: Absolutely gorgeous: as clean and fresh as when made all those years ago. The pastel-like coloured artwork looks amazing with any marks or blemishes almost minuscule. One faint half moon type surface crease hardly even shows and any rim impression the same.

Cover Back: The back is as close to full mint as they ever get – this even better than the magnificent front.

Top Edge: No wear whatsoever.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with again, barely any wear, the odd tiny burr trace being critical. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Pristine Mint: solid, straight with no compression and retaining that lovely boxy shape. All text is perfect and unworn and very well centred.

Corners: All practically mint as made with crisp beautifully defined shape with no dinks or creasing.

Cover Summary: A wonderful, almost archive quality all-round example of this famous 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This attractive item should please most-all collectors and could indeed prove a significant upgrade for many.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: minimal traces of ageing, any discolouration light, any creasing light and few, all edges unsplit with no repairs and both window circles immaculate.

The Insert Sheet: MINT(-): practically as made, little else to really add.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played with just a faint surface mark on side one (no sound whatsoever) and look hard, little else at all. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors, early Bowie albums are never easy to find like this.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent Bowie album plays as good as it looks with strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing – far from guaranteed on this label at this time. This noteworthy as I have heard this, and so many RCA records of this era with considerable surface noise and pressing sounds. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this very early pressing I feel sure and without doubt, this is one of the best ‘Pin-Ups’ I have heard for ages. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled and not exposed to any heavy tracking equipment. So many Bowie records of the ‘Ziggy’ era were played to destruction on goodness knows what by teenagers and finding one hardly played at all is quite unusual. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and with the stunning cover and insertg sheet, this merits my highest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
