Artist or Band: DAVID BOWIE
Album Title: David Bowie (later reissued as ‚Space Oddity’)
Producer(s): Tony Visconti. Gus Dudgeon produced the song ‘Space Oddity’.
General Album Info: This is one of of the most sought-after David Bowie albums ever made. Without any doubt one of the most elusive and rare Bowie albums in existence and extremely hard to find nowadays. At the time it failed to sell and was not available in the shops for very long. This was issued on Philips for a very brief time only before being reissued a second time 3 years later on RCA Victor when his career then took off. A practically unknown artist at this time and a record bought by a mere handful of curious record buyers. Of course this very rare gem has a totally different cover to the more widely known and common RCA version. This makes it really extra special, with the back being particurlarly gorgeous with wonderful artwork produced by George Underwood. Moreover, this original issue has an extra short song that follows track two. It is known as ‘Don’t Sit Down’ and lasts approximately 40 seconds, it was dropped from the RCA version so yet another reason this original is so sought after. This ‘extra song’ gets no mention on label or sleeve. The failing to sell initially is another reason for its rarity nowadays – regardless of the condition. The guides quite rightly put a high valuation on this album because this is a record that almost never turns up. This copy is definitely not mint anymore, but still in acceptable condition. Judged by Record Collector standards it plays a good VG grade in its unique original mix and vastly superior mastering, fidelity and details. At quieter passages there is some background (crackle) noise present/hearable but not to the extent that it would largely spoil listening pleasure. The beautiful fold-out cover has light wear but is fully intact without any flaws except for a tiny tear on front top side left and a very small punch hole on bottom right side (see scans). Besides the classic single ‘Space Oddity’, all the other songs are magnificent too, great vocals and lyrics (all reproduced inside). Bowie plays 12 string guitar, stylophone, kalimba, rosedale electric chord organ. A rare opportunity not to be missed.
