Label Conditions: Both immaculate, practically as-made, ultra clean, fresh and attractive with a very deep orange colour, hardly a spindle trace to be seen. This record appears hardly played with all elements of the very impressive.

Brief Info: The eleventh studio album and regarded as one of Bowie’s most influential ever. It was the first of the famed ‘Berlin Trilogy’ recorded with Brian Eno. Far more experimental with inspiration from the Krautrock scene of the early 1970s. This sound was developed still further on ‘Heroes’ and then ‘Lodger’. There were hints of this on his previous album ‘Station to Station’. Initially opinion was somewhat divided on this new direction, many found the music difficult, even bleak. Some were disappointed by the lack of vocals on side two and felt dis-satisfied. But as the shock of this new sound subsided, this album is now regarded as a true classic and a brave issue. Personally, I regard it as one of his finest ever, being less commercial and dark. A wonderful work as were the next two in the series. This is a superb copy as well, it includes the stickered rear cover in very fine condition, this never easy and prone to rubbing and wear. Also the large insert and the quite rare fan club sheet. Most importantly, the record appears hardly played and plays impressively well with very little at all unwanted. That never to be dismissed lightly, I have heard far too many Bowie albums with pressing issues and unwanted sounds. My play-grade for this proved very enjoyable, alas, not all are.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with the large rectangular sticker on the back listing the song titles. This was omitted from later versions. Printed and made in England by Garrodprint Ltd, includes the December 1976 date-coded RCA white inner sleeve, the song credits insert and the elusive small Fan Club ‘booklet’.

Cover Front: Very clean and attractively fresh with barely any rubbing, and no light fading for which this is very prone. Any marks, creases or blemishes few and very light and faint, there is minimal record rim impression at all. A front hardly aged and looking very impressive.

Cover Back: Firstly the sticker that again only came with a select few very early covers, this only slight discolouration on the right edge area. The lack of rubbing, creasing or picking clearly reiterates it has not been removed. The solid orange surface has hardly any rubbing, any creasing fine and faint edge types few avoid, the merest sliver trace of light fading on the very spine fold, this amongst the least I have seen on this cover. Any hint of grubbiness or ageing very slight indeed, both front and back are impressive for an uncompromising and difficult cover.

Top Edge: Perfectly straight and unworn, this exceptional with no light fading at all.

Bottom Edge: A little patchy rubbing, seldom avoided totally on this storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening or burr traces very little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Quite thin, but solid, straight with any compression very light, all text and graphic unrubbed, any light fading negligible and mild.

Corners: A modest rub on the bottom right, any others tiny and very light, excellent shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A cover that rarely survives without ring wear, often heavy rubbing and major fading, this has little of any. Fresh with mostly deep colour with minimal wear, this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an RCA imprinted white inner sleeve, these were not lined. Two pristine window circles and hardly creased, all edges unsplit with no repairs. Any discolouration near the seam adhesive areas which is only light. This is date-coded and manufactured in December 1976, the code being 12-76 as seen in close-up.

The Song Credits Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): printed on both sides. Clean, fresh with no creasing or discolouration worthy of note. Put simply: almost as issued.

The Fan Club Mini ‘Booklet’: EXCELLENT(++): with just a small crease to the spine top to stop a near mint grading. This original (not a copy), a single folded 4-page booklet printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. The imprint G&L with DB 4 on the back. Black and white promoting other Bowie albums with a form to send to the American Fan Club address in Los Angeles. This fully intact with no writing. A scarce insert and not seen often or available long with first issue copies.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better still. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and typical from the collection it came from. Purchased from new by just one owner. Any surface marks or blemishes very few, mostly light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, this has little to fault overall. Visually a lovely record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking and landmark Bowie album plays up to, and mostly even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, absolute silence is near impossible as this has some very quiet passages, and RCA records were rarely, if ever ‘Decca’ quiet. So the odd trace here-and-there, but this being somewhat critical of a challenging album. It has no inherent pressing noises, rasps or distortions, that is always good to report, and I know for a fact many copies have them – also confirmed by several Bowie fans and collectors I know. Overall, a near exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I know for certain this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
