Description

WOW!! For sale is a spectacular RCA Dynalflex 1st US Hollywood plant pressing of one of David Bowie’s finest albums, Hunky Dory, from 1971. First pressing indicators are: no mention of Mainman, no RE or shadow text on rear, green tinged textured cover with black border, sepia toned rear cover with no mention of Rick Wakeman appearing courtesy of A&M and LSP-4623 typed on the lower left hand corner of rear sleeve. I typically collect UK pressings only but this is a TOP copy that would be hard to beat. Anyone who believes thicker vinyl automatically makes a better sounding record has never heard an RCA Dynaflex release from the 70’s! Sounds gorgeous!!

From Discogs:

There were three pressing plants in the US - Rockaway, Indiana and Hollywood.

the other two were 1S, 2S and they have a small H or I in the run out

Rockaway is the only one scratched the others are stamped.

They would fill up sleeves with records until one or the other ran out.

Midway through the first pressing, the ran out of the original stickers for the shrink wrap and started using a different sticker.

The early part of this first pressing has a clear sticker on the shrink wrap.

The later part of the first pressing has a mottled brown sticker (this one) on the shrink wrap.

Both are still first pressings especially if the cover and matrix numbers indicate one such as this one.

Earliest Matrix Numbers!:

Side 1: (stamped) APRS - 5947-1S H

Side 2: (stamped) APRS - 5948-1S H

Sleeve: EX+

Still snug in original shrink wrap w/ mottled (or speckled) title sticker. No creases or splits...shrink still snugly around sleeve...crisp with razor sharp opening edge...only signs of wear being a tiny bit of white to the upper right corner and a small bit of white to the lower right where shrink (not seam) has begun to split apart about 2” along lower right hand corner and less on the top. Fully legible spine. Original “mottled” Title/Artist Sticker still firmly affixed. The sticker is the 2nd variation sticker appearing on later runs of 1st pressings with LSP-4623-2 and speckled background, not the earliest clear background one which makes this unique. The disc and sleeve are both earliest pressings so this must have been held in the factory long enough to get the 2nd sticker! Rare!! ZERO unwanted writing or marks. No seam splits or unwanted damage. There is a handwritten shop sticker affixed to the upper left shrink wrap either from time of release or not long after as price was only $3.81! This could mostly likely be removed but I do not wish to attempt it for for fear of damaging shrink.

Disc: VG+

Visual Grade. Beautiful original glossy shine!! Only some light scuffs and a few very light superficial “scratches” under bright light. Sounds beautiful on my system with no skips, stalls, sticks or jumps. Only some light crackles in quiet parts which would inevitably be helped by a good professional clean. Piano sounds incredibly full and loud as was noted with these early US pressings.

Original custom inner: EX+

I’m remarkable, undamaged condition unbelievably with absolutely no splits or tears!! Only the tiniest of inevitable wrinkles along one corner but no serious bends or folds. NO unwanted writing or marks!

Labels: NM

Completely perfect orange RCA labels with NO unwanted writing or marks. Only the lightest one or possibly 2 veeerrrry slight spindle traces indicating very little or very careful play.

This is is the nicest copy I have ever handled and nearly impossible to find a 1st pressing still in shrink with the sticker in this condition!!
