Dave Mason's first solo album was one of several recordings to come out of the Leon Russell/Delaney & Bonnie axis in 1970. (Other notables included Eric Clapton's solo debut and Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen.) Alone Together contains an excellent batch of melodically pleasing songs, built on a fat bed of strumming acoustic guitars with tasteful electric guitar accents and leads. Mason's vocals are embellished with harmonies from Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Delaney & Bonnie. Besides the well-known semi-hit "Only You Know and I Know," and which was also a number 20 hit for Delaney & Bonnie, highlights include the bouncy gospel-inflected "Waitin' on You" and the banjo-bejeweled "Just a Song." "Look at You Look at Me" and the wonderfully wah-wahed "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave" are reminiscent of Mason's former band, Traffic, whose drummer, Jim Capaldi is among the all-star cast assembled here. Alone Together represents Dave Mason at his peak. Later releases would betray lyrical shallowness, forced rhymes, and clichéd guitar licks. But here, everything comes together perfectly. The original vinyl release of Alone Together was also noteworthy for the marble grain of the record itself -- as the record played on the turntable, the tone arm appeared to be floating through the clouds.

In 1994 and 1995 MCA records briefly experimented with the revival of the audiophile pressings in their "Heavy Vinyl" series. Much to audio connoisseur's dismay, the label abandoned their effort after releasing only about 5 or 6 titles (which are now prized collector's finds) of which, if our memory serves, only three rock titles were issued: this album, the Who's "Who's next" album from 1971 and Buddy Holly's first solo album from 1958.

THESE RECORDINGS HAVE BEEN DRAMATICALLY ESCALATING IN VALUE AND DEMAND. ADDITIONAL FACTOR IN INCREASED DEMAND FOR THESE GORGEOUS RECORDINGS IS THE FACT THAT ALL OF THEM WERE LIMITED-NUMBER PRESSINGS, AND THAT SOME OF THEM WERE INSANELY HARD TO FIND EVEN WHILE THE MCA’S HEAVY VINYL SERIES WAS STILL IN PRINT. This is one of the rare opportunities to acquire this great album in its FINEST audio format, no longer in print, and no longer easily obtainable. (a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (minor, superficial "hairline" scuff noted on 'Look at you look at me'.

(b)          The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)         In addition, the record comes with an additional protective paperboard sleeve.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.

(f)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
