Dave Bixby's Ode to Quetzalcoatl is a private press recording from the late 1960s as representative of the times as any to be released. As a result, original copies of the scant vinyl release are highly sought after today by fans of psychedelic music. But this isn't your typical psych record. Bixby was an acid casualty who subsequently joined a Christian cult that also worshipped the Aztec feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl. Which also means this isn't your typical Christian record. Bixby forms a loose song cycle about his fall from grace ("Drug Song," the touching "Mother") and his subsequent return ("Open Doors," "Secret Forest"). The record is exceedingly spare, featuring mainly Bixby's plaintive vocals and a twelve-string guitar. Only on the last two tracks, which also feature a harmonica ("Secret Forest") and a flute ("Peace"), does the outside world make a presence. Ode to Quetzalcoatl is kind of like Syd Barrett's albums but with a twisted happy ending. While avoiding succumbing to the acid neuroses that Barrett eventually would, Bixby swaps out his lysergic for His lysergic. Driving the album is Bixby's soulful strumming and his lonely vocals, which combine to create some of the saddest music ever set to tape.
