The fainthearted need not apply. To newcomers, we say light a torch and brace yourselves. A Blaze In The Northern Sky was Norwegian extreme metal outfit Darkthrone's first excursion into the jet black end of the genre, and therefore sounding about as uncompromising and determined to make a serious impact as anything you could ever imagine hearing.

Originally unveiled in 1992, it's the opening chapter in a trio of records that have since been dubbed the 'Unholy Trinity', and is an unarguable high point of the band's overall career. Huge, cacophonous tracks that seem to channel all the fury of humankind, with a lo-fi sound helping to accentuate the raw energy and realness of the style, which, back when this one arrived, had been suffering from a lack of fresh ideas.
