This is an ultra-rare single recorded by Portuguese female singer Daphne. She was in fact the wife of Nuno Rodrigues, later one of the leaders of the Prog Rock legends Banda do Casaco, therefore it comes as no surprise that both songs here are written by him. Daphne was also a guest member in some of Banda do Casaco’s records.
What you get here is a beautiful and sometimes haunting psych folk sound, with the high tone voice of Daphne leading you to unknown pastures of green fields. The flute contributes to the bucolic sound, which is in the same vein as Trader Horne, Trees or Spirogyra of that time. The first song, “Barzabu” (the name of a devil creature) takes on a melody that would later appear in Banda do Casaco acclaimed second album, Coisas do Arco da Velha. “Pastora” [Shepherd Girl] is the beautiful B-side.
If you already have and treasure Banda do Casaco first and highly coveted first record, Dos Benefícios dum Vendido no Reino dos Bonifácios (mentioned in Hans Pokora “4001 Record Collector Dreams”), and you wonder how did that extraordinary music came from, you will surely love this record.
