Description
What can you say about Dando Shaft? Variously described as Acid Folk, Psych Folk, Folk-Jazz and Folk-Rock (er, I don’t think so…), for me it’s think of Incredible String Band with a tad of Pentangle and a hint of early Swarbrick-like mandolin work plus the odd unexpected blues/jazz chord thrown in. There are flutes, fiddles, mandolins, tablas and a string bass that comes at you through the floor. Just terrific!
This is the 1970 UK ultra-rare debut album on Youngblood Records (not to be confused with releases in Canada and Germany and reissues on Decca etc), when Dando Shaft were still an all-male group prior to the arrival of Polly Bolton in October 1970. The disc displays an A1/B1 matrix. I suppose not that many were pressed and not that many were sold – hence the rarity.
What’s this copy like then? OK, I won’t pretend it’s mint, but I reckon it’s nigh on as good as you can reasonably get.
I would grade the vinyl as VG++/EX- being very clean and bright. It does show signs of use with light hairlines and the lightest scuffs, however under stringent play-testing I would consider it sounds EX with certainly no serious deterioration of sound quality. There is only the faintest of static crackle in some of the quietest moments but generally even he gaps between tracks stay silent. There is the odd pop and click as you would expect and the only audible repetitive ticks are very faint on Track 1 Side 2 and last for only 4 revolutions! Generally, it plays great!
I would grade the sleeve as VG++/EX- being generally in very good condition showing some signs of use but only minimal shelfwear. There is some laminate lift on the front cover near the spine (pictured) and some light laminate creasing to the back (in no cases is the laminate actually broken). There are no tears, writing or sticker residues. The inner sleeve is white generic.
Basically both disc and sleeve show the signs of age and use that could be expected of an item that someone has enjoyed but has also taken the greatest care of.
If you have made it thus far down the listing, then well done! Just a quick word on postage. This is a record of some value – the cheapest I would send it would be First Class (Signed For) (£4.90) and would prefer Recorded Delivery (£7.90). However it is for the buyer to choose.

For your information the gradings I use are as follows:-
Mint (M) - Brand New (Sealed)
Near mint (NM) - Looks almost unplayed * Cover almost brand new
Excellent (EX) - Maybe a light scuff but otherwise great condition * Cover will have some wear/slight crease/faint ring wear etc
Very good (VG) - Could have scuffing and some light scratches etc *Cover might have some creasing/fading/ring wear/marks or writing but still reasonable condition
Good (G) - Should play through ok but will have plenty of scratches etc * Cover could be ripped/stained/unglued etc
Fair - Very ordinary/ Might play but most likely just for the collection* Cover will be pretty terrible.
