A MEGA RARE RECORDING IN THE HISTORIC HMV CATALOGUE No 2 SERIES FROM DAN LENO
BOTH SIDES WERE RECORDED IN 1901

Dan Leno (20 December 1860 – 31 October 1904) was an English comedian and stage actor, famous for appearing in music hall, comic plays, pantomimes, Victorian burlesques and musical comedies, during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. He originated and popularised many songs, sketches and monologues in his music hall acts and made both sound and visual recordings of some of his work shortly before he died. Although brief, Leno's recording period (1901–1903) produced around thirty recordings on one-sided shellac discs using the early acoustic recording process. They were released by the Gramophone and Typewriter Company, one of the early recording companies, which became the parent organisation for the His Master's Voice (HMV) label.
Before Leno's recording debut, music hall comedian Harry Bluff had recorded a number of Leno's songs, which were marketed by the Edison Bell Company in London in 1898. Leno was initially reluctant to adopt the new medium of sound recording, but he was eventually enticed into the studio with a lucrative commission of one shilling per dozen discs sold. His records sold for five shillings each and ran for three minutes. Some of the recorded songs differed from Leno's music hall versions by being condensed to incorporate part of the sketch from which the song was taken. It is unknown how many discs were sold, because no record was ever kept of their sales. Despite the success of the recordings and the praise he received from the record distributors, Leno felt uncomfortable in the recording studio. In an interview for Pearson's Magazine in 1903, he stated: "How the dickens can I patter and warble to that thing. Can't a few of you come round and smile and clap a bit?"

There's no place on the face of the earth like the Tower of London, if you've never been there, go again, it's a glorious place. Everything old and now, in the first place, when you visit the tower of London, it's free... but you have to pay a shilling to go in. And the first ancient item you'll see is the man that takes the money at the door. Then you pass through the refreshment room which is the oldest refreshment room in the tower... and the only one. And there are some very ancient items in the refreshment room... such as... the buns... and the ginger beer... and the barmaids and the what-nots. 'Good day ladies, do you wish to see the tower... splendid day to see the tower, nice and gloomy... Oh yes, I can show you round the tower, of course, I'm not allowed to do so but I can do so. Now er... in the first place, this is the refreshment room... er, of course if you want anything in the refreshment room, of course.. now is the time. You don't care for anything! No... thank you. Only, as we go along there's no oranges or ginger beer to be had and of course if you feel faint you have to come back through the refreshment room. No... no you don't want any... no. I do! Still, we'll proceed. Standing with our backs to the refreshment room we get a lovely view of the tower. Follow me ladies. Standing with our backs to the tower we get er... a lovely view of the er... refreshment room. Now you see that man, over there... that's the sentry, he stands there night and day with his gun fixed, bayonet fixed and his eye is only on one spot and that is er... the refreshment room.
For it's a splendid time to see the London tower
Everything is free and there's nothing for to pay

The record plays loud and clear without distortion - The condition of the playing surface is Excellent except towards the end of the tower of london side where there is a light audible scratch starting from a shallow needle dig about 2 cm from the end.
