Billy The Kid as a ballet is considerably more than conventional gunplay and heroics. Composer Aaron Copland used Western and cowboy melodies for his score. American musical nationalism received a tremendous boost with this jaunty, tuneful, atmospheric composition.  Likewise, Rodeo is one of the liveliest things Copland ever wrote, and it's no surprise that it should have developed into one of his most popular scores.
