RARE - Comus– First Utterance UK Dawn DNLS 3019 with Lyric Sheet, Folk Prog Psych FIRST
"First Utterance" was the debut album by the British progressive folk and psychedelic rock band Comus. Released in 1971, this album is considered a cult classic in the world of progressive and experimental music. Comus were known for their unique and unconventional approach to folk and rock music, and "First Utterance" is a prime example of their distinctive sound. It is a deeply enigmatic and haunting album that defies easy categorization. Comus blended elements of folk, rock, and even elements of classical music to create a dark and otherworldly atmosphere. The lyrics are often surreal, drawing from mythology and folklore, and the music itself is characterized by intricate acoustic guitar work, eerie flutes, and the hauntingly distinctive vocals of lead singer Roger Wootton.
One of the album's standout tracks, "Diana," is an epic, multi-part composition that shifts between gentle, pastoral passages and intense, cacophonous crescendos. The song's lyrics draw from Roman mythology and tell a story of seduction and transformation. The cover art, like the music itself, is known for its unique and somewhat unsettling aesthetic. The gatefold cover was printed by Garrod & Lofthouse Limited on white unlaminated card. As such the white background was guaranteed to show every mark and the front of this example is true to form. In saying this however it is still a very reasonable copy. There is evidence of storage and resultant rubbing on the bottom edge which can be seen in the photographs. The top edge is less affected. The spine is certainly worn although the title, band, label and catalogue number are readable. There is a very faint crease on the font bottom edge but this is not significant. The back is similar with a small brown mark (foxing?) top centre. Entry edge wear is apparent as can be seen in the photographs. The inside of the cover is clean and unmarked. The colours remain rich and vivid with no blemishes. Overall this this example is typical of this album. It has no tears or splits and shows only slightly more than normal wear and tear for a 52 year old album. It is therefore graded conservatively as VG- to VG.
The inner sleeve is undamaged apart from age related discolouration. No tears or splits. Graded EX.
The lyric inner has been handled and has a very small 5mm tear top right when looking at 'Diana' side. This is a shame because it's otherwise perfect. Graded as VG-.
The first press record is graded as VG+. The orange Dawn labels show spindle marks on both sides. Otherwise they are unmarked. There is a little static noise on the run in on both sides and, in respect of side 1, there is nothing else which causes an issue when listening to the album. Side 2 is slightly different in that there are a few light clicks which are audible at the beginning of Track 1. This is not really an issue and, once again, does not detract from the excellent audio. There are hairlines on both sides. Side 1 does have a very light scratch visible on the last track. This does not impact on play at all. There is a second light scratch on Side 2 (although clearly heavier than that on Side 1) which does have an impact on the audio as is mentioned above. Sound quality is excellent.

In conclusion, although this is not an archive copy, it is an excellent example of a captivating and enigmatic piece of ethereal and experimental work. It captures the essence of the band's unique blend of folk, progressive, and psychedelic rock, as well as their exploration of mystical and enigmatic themes. The cover art further serves as an invitation to delve into the intriguing world of the album's music. Until that archive copy comes along this is the one for you.
