Description
The Mosaic Records website no longer has a description, so...this is the third and final volume in their reissue of all jazz recordings, issued and not, by Commodore Records from 1929 to1957. Hundreds of artists and titles filled 3 boxes with 23, 23, and then 20 lps. The 20 lps here come in two hard slipcases inside a hard archival box. The records were pressed to high standards and usually recorded the best they could be. In some cases, Commodore acquired recordings made by others, such as the Billie Holiday "Strange Fruit" session, made for another label who refused to release it but traded the recordings to Milt Gabler at Commodore. This box collects some alternate takes undiscovered at the release of vol. 1 or 2, by Holiday, Hot Lips Page, Bud Freeman, and Bunk Johnson. This box includes several ensembles at a Town Hall Concert in NYC on July 9, 1945, such as Red Norvo, Don Byas and Slam Stewart duets, Bill Coleman, Gene Krupa Trio, Teddy Wilson and his Quartet, and Stuff Smith. There are many sessions of traditional jazz by a couple of generations of players, such as Eddie Condon, George Brunies, Wild Bill Davidson, Eddie Edwards, Sidney Bechet, and Bob Wilber. Fine piano playing from Ralph Sutton, Mel Powell, and Willie the Lion. Not to overlook Vic Dickenson, Frank Wess, Peck Kelley, and Edmund Hall. There are two heavy booklets, the 48 page book on the music in this box, with photos, and the 68 page discography of the label in entirety. Other Mosaic releases have hand-numbered notices, but this has a printed notice that it was limited to 2500 albums. I have been the only owner.
