Release date: September 1968.
On offer here is an EXTREMELY RARE original British FONTANA issue of the second album by the COLLIN BATES TRIO entitled “Brew”. Not too many of you would be aware of this, but COLLIN BATES originally hailed from SYDNEY—AUSTRALIA!
This LP hardly ever turns up; so do not miss the opportunity to acquire one of the RAREST BRITISH JAZZ ALBUMS ever released!

The album does a great job of balancing modern ideas and soulful expressions -- and Bates' trio really stretches out way past the obvious formats -- using the bass boldly in some numbers, the drums strongly in others, and letting Bates' piano move from light melody to some more sophisticated lines. Barry Dillon handles bass and John Dillon's on drums -- and titles include "Brew", "Little Lindy", "Bus Dance", "Claudia's Dance", "Epilogue King Chanticleer", "Laura", and "Embarcadero". (3) Joined here by bassist Barry Dillon and drummer John Webb, Bates serves up another mixture of originals and seasoned covers such as ‘Days Of Wine and Roses’, with the title track – a pulsating 6/4 blues – standing out as the key cut. As he states in the sleevenotes, ‘In short, not art, but entertainment…’ Full page adverts for the LP were taken out in the jazz press, but it sold poorly, making it hugely collectable. Bates, incidentally, was renowned for knowing literally thousands of songs by memory, ranging from ragtime to modern bop via music hall, show tunes and swing. (Tony Higgins)

EX visual: beautiful glossy sheen—HIGHLY ACCEPTABLE copy despite a few hairline scuffs & a light surface mark across tracks 6&7 (side 1: EX+, side 2: VG++); audible: just PLAYED LOUD through 100 WATT speakers and it SOUNDS GREAT OVERALL, just some insignificant surface noise in places; labels: hardly any spindle wear, “SAMPLE RECORD – NOT FOR SALE” sticker on side 1, see digital photo #2. HARD TO FIND A BETTER COPY!!
