Description

Linda Perhacs, Vashti Bunyan, Bridget St. John, Catherine Howe in her first album. You can add Collie Ryan to this short list of THE great female folk psychedelic artists of all time (underproduced category). But you probably don't know her name yet unless you're seriously devoted to the genre, or unless you were a customer at the New Age Farms fresh squeezed juice store in Santa Barbara 1973, which is the only place & time these records were ever officially distributed to the public prior to this posting. So allow me to go on for a bit.

I discovered the third album in this set at an Utah thrift store about four years ago. Ms. Ryan's soaring, penetrating voice captured me right away, and her intelligent, mystical-yet-cliche-free poetry has kept me enthralled ever since. These are not hippie artifacts, and Collie Ryan was no spoiled acid head. The music on these albums is simple and to the point, featuring only her voice and guitar with sporadic echo effects added to great subtle effect. These records are intended as dedications to Theosophian principles of karma and spiritual growth.

I located Ms. Ryan and paid her a visit, which involved a little more legwork than usual -- she lives in one of the most remote places in the country, having completely dropped out of society more than 25 years ago. Today she is a completely self-sustaining artist who makes her wayf by painting mandalas on hubcaps, living without electricity or running water yet quite content and in love with the land. (And no, she's not crazy -- you and I, on the other hand...) She's a hero and inspiration to everyone who knows her, straight out of fiction, really. (Perhaps someone would like to give me some magazine pages to tell the whole story?) If I may be forgiven for such grand talk, Collie Ryan is the most spiritual person I've ever met, and you can hear it in her music.

These three LPs were produced in an edition of 500 each. 32 years later there are a couple of sets left but not many. Sealed mint copies here, and it should be noted that as with many private pressings there may be unavoidable, slight surface noise with these. I opened a couple and found no warping. The sale of this record goes directly benefits Ms. Ryan, and I'm only taking money for seller's fees & a 10% tip; the rest goes to her. (In case you didn't already know the artist usually gets screwed.) Ms. Ryan, who has devoted her life to music, art, and meditation, can use your support. But whatever, these aren't tax deductible and you just want to hear great music. Well here's a song. (Please note this mp3 comes from my less than perfect thrift store copy of the record.)
