Das Debütalbum von Joe Cocker aus dem Jahr 1968 war mehr als ungewöhnlich. Die Musik changierte zwischen Rock, Pop, Blues und Soul, noch bevor jemand den Begriff "Crossover" erfunden hatte. Dann ist das titelgebende Stück auch noch die Coverversion eines Beatlessongs und verweist still und leise auf die lange Liste an Musikern, die an diesem Frühwerk beteiligt waren. Darunter solche Größen wie Jimmy Page an der Gitarre, Chris Stainton an Bass und Piano oder Stevie Winwood an der Orgel. Unverkennbar bleibt die Reibeisenstimme von Joe Cocker, die damals sogar noch einen gewissen Schmelz auflegen konnte und die gekonnte Kombination mit Hintergrundsängerinnen verleiht ihr noch einen besonderen Charme.

Kevin Gray hat das Album von den analogen Bändern neu gemastert. Die Hybrid-SACD vermittelt den Eindruck, als hätte jemand eine moderne Produktion mit dem Sound der 60er Jahre veröffentlichen wollen. Ein größere Kompliment könnte man wahrscheinlich gar nicht machen, denn selten lässt sich ein doch schon betagteres Werk so gelungen in die Gegenwart transportieren.

Joe Cocker's 1969 album release, With a Little Help From My Friends, is one of those rare debuts that really captures an artist at their prime. The album is strong and confident and in many ways peerless and impossible to classify for it's a little bit of rock, blue-eyed soul, blues and pop rolled into one soulful rasp of a voice that results in a profound listening experience.

Cocker's voice is bolstered by some very sharp playing by an impressive list of British rock luminaries including Henry McCullough, Albert Lee and Jimmy Page, Guitar; Chris Stainton, Tommy Eyre and Stevie Winwood, keyboards, and Procol Harum's organist and drummer: Matthew Fisher and the late B.J.Wilson.

Besides the classic Beatle cover tune the allbum includes brilliant interpretations of material from Bob Dylan, Dave Mason and three originals. Cocker performed his radical re-arranged version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" at Woodstock and the tune was included in the popular Woodstock documentary film. In 2001 his totally gospel fueled rock 'n soul re-harmonization of the Beatles classic version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Joe Cocker's debut album holds up extraordinarily well across four decades, the singer's performance bolstered by some very sharp playing, not only by his established sideman/collaborator Chris Stainton, but also some top-notch session musicians, among them drummer Clem Cattini, Steve Winwood on organ, and guitarists Jimmy Page and Albert Lee, all sitting in. It's Cocker's voice, a soulful rasp of an instrument backed up by Madeline Bell, Sunny Weetman and Rossetta Hightower that carries this album and makes "Change in Louise," "Feeling Alright," "Just Like a Woman," "I Shall Be Released," and even "Bye Bye Blackbird" into profound listening experiences. But the surprises in the arrangements, tempo, and approaches taken help make this an exceptional album. Tracks like "Just Like a Woman," with its soaring gospel organ above a lean textured acoustic and light electric accompaniment, and the guitar-dominated rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" -- the formal debut of the Grease Band on record -- all help make this an exceptional listening experience. The 1999 A&M reissue not only includes new notes and audiophile-quality sound, but also a pair of bonus tracks, the previously unanthologized B-sides "The New Age of Lily" and "Something Coming On," deserved better than the obscurity in which they previously dwelt. [With a Little Help was re-released on CD in 2015.]
