Description

Nobody who followed folk music or blues in the 1960s will need to be reminded who Mississippi John Hurt was. His astonishing guitar playing and his charming vocals with their sly humor delighted audiences or several years. Discovered by the great Tommy Rockwell, he had made 13 sides in 1928 for OKeh Records, but then the Depression hit, OKeh went broke, and Hurt went back to herding cows. Those old recordings had become classics, and rediscovered by Tom Hoskins and Dick Spottswood, he moved to Washington DC and enjoyed three years of new success before he passed away.  
He recorded a great many songs for the Library of Congress, some later issued on Flyright and Heritage; but these are the first two LPs that were commercially released, produced by Spottswood, on labels various called Piedmont, Gryphon or Chesapeake. He did remakes of 'Avalon Blues', 'Spike Driver Blues' etc from 1928; audience favorites such as 'Salty Dog' and the delightfully raunchy 'Candy Man Blues' are here; 'My Creole Belle', a sweet love song with a beat, is based on part of a rag published in 1900; but all these tunes have Hurt's unique delivery. 
The sleeves have normal shelf wear; the records are in very good condition. (The second one has a dozen or so clicks on it from the pressing plant.) Two classic LPs for one price, postage paid.
