Clan of Xymox, also known as Xymox at various parts of their career, are a darkwave/gothic rock band founded in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1983 by Ronny Moorings,

History

The band began in 1984 with the self-published "Subsequent Pleasures" EP under the name Xymox, solely written and recorded by Ronny Moorings with an appearance of his at the time girlfriend Anke Wolbert on the song "Call It Weird". Ronny Moorings had a chance meeting with Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance in Nijmegen when trying to sell his EP Subsequent Pleasures over there and hence giving one copy in return for the invitation to see Dead Can Dance gig in (the venue) Doornroosje, led later on to an invitation to support the band on a small UK tour, and soon after meeting with the label boss Ivo Watts-Russell, sign a contract with the label 4AD Records.

In this period Ronny Moorings asked his former flat mate, Pieter Nooten, to join the band and soon, with Anke included, they recorded in Scotland their debut album, self-titled under their newly adopted name, Clan of Xymox, and was released by 4AD in 1985. Drew comparisons to Joy Division/New Order and The Cure. 1986 saw their second album, Medusa, continuing in this dark vein. This album wasn't an easy album for the band. Ronny Moorings and John Fryer (the in-house engineer of the Blackwing studios) had to redo and re-record certain songs and additionaly mix the tracks in the Blackwing studios as the initial recordings did not convince the label boss Ivo. Later Ivo gave his o.k. for a release.

1987 saw the band provide a re-recorded version of "Muscoviet Musquito" (of their Subsequent Pleasures EP) track for "Lonely Is an Eyesore", a compilation album highlighting the diversity of talent on the 4AD roster. "Muscoviet Musquito", sandwiched between Dif Juz and Dead Can Dance, showed a more confident side to the band.

In 1988, Ronny Moorings recorded in the Woodbine Studio in Leamington Spa, the "Blind Hearts & A Million Things" EP, of which became a huge KROQ hit in California (USA) hitting the number 1 spot in Rockpool and Billboard. Manager Raymond Coffer managed to convince Clan Of Xymox to leave 4AD and strive for bigger goals, seeing a potential of the band in the USA, especially after the 1988 EP success. In the meantime Pieter Nooten worked with Michael Brook on their joint project Sleeps With The Fishes, an ambient venture.

Clan of Xymox and 4AD parted company in a friendly way, Ivo Watts even suggested the band to work with Pete Walsh as a producer for the next album (and they did), Pieter Nooten had not left the band but contributed next to nothing for the next album, the name Xymox was once again adopted, and the band signed to the Polygram subsidiary label Wing Records. 1989 "Twist of Shadows" was the band's most commercially successful album, selling 300,000 copies. It was in many ways a bold record and showed that being signed to a major concern wasn't going to stifle a natural sense of musical adventure. Supported by three single releases, "Obsession", "Imagination" and "Blind Hearts", this was an album that confirmed the diversity of their appeal as again they clicked in both dance and alternative circles.

The bands fourth album, "Phoenix", with already poppy dancy influences coming into the arrangements and a bigger role for Anke (who formerly only contibuted 1 song per album & with P. Nooten still on board but still not being really involved in writing and recording either), released worldwide in 1991, was their last album on Wing. It had ecstatic reviews but did not sell as much as their predecessor, despite their loyal U.S. fan base.

PolyGram was without a president of the company at the time (for months on row) and subsequently no decisions were made by anyone, a big ship without a course. In the end PolyGram decided to slash all acts who did not sell more then 2 million albums per release. Despite that the band embarked on sell-out tours around the world and featured in college alternative and mainstream Billboard charts the band and its label Wing got slashed.

This period made all involved in the band rethink their positions. Ronny Moorings was always Clan Of Xymox or Xymox kept the bane rightfully and for that matter Anke and Pieter decided also to go their own way. Ronny decided it was a time for change. Influenced by his surroundings and living in London since 1989, the beginning of the 90's had arrived and this caused him to experiment with other directions, resulting in the (X-ULT/ZOK/Xymox Control) releases of the albums "Metamorphosis" in 1991 and" Headclouds" in 1992. Here, in addition to their trademark choral sounds and hypnotic electro rhythms, are albums spanning a whole range of styles and influences, taking Xymox into the '90s dance era. It is the work of a band who are never afraid to take chances. In the UK they nearly entered the top 40 charts with the "Reaching Out" single and were played on heavy rotation. Looking back Ronny says that: "On Headclouds, Xymox tried to combine dance grooves with a melancholic sound, plus vocals. It was part of an experiment which we now steer clear of... After Headclouds, I moved back to Amsterdam and had a break from making music, and regained my interest by meeting different people, going to Industrial/Goth parties, and basically rediscovering myself again".[1]

In 1994 Xymox re-released their first (from 1984, only 500 original printed copies exist) limited availability mini album Subsequent Pleasures and without consent, Zok Records released a "Remix" album which contains only radio edits of the albums "Metamorphosis" and "Headclouds" compiled together. Mojca Zugna made both artworks for the band and joined later (after their move back to the Netherlands in 1995 ) as a live keyboard player for their Dutch try out tour in 1995. Other members of the "Headclouds" tour were since the early period live members Will Anvers on drums and Frank Weyzig playing guitar.

In 1996 Ronny Moorings contributed music for PC video game titled "Total Mayhem".. A year later he created music for the game "Revenant", released worldwide by Domark.

In 1997 Ronny Moorings ended the Xymox era and restarted Clan of Xymox. The band signed to an USA and German based Independent label, Tess Records, and the album "Hidden Faces" was released in the same year. Moorings described it as "a logical follow-up to what Clan of Xymox made in the early '80s". The band, consisting of Ronny Moorings guitars and vocals, Mojca Zugna bass guitar, keyboards and vocals, Rob Vonk guitar, keyboards and back vocals, Rui Ramos electronic drums, sampler and cymbals, and Nina Simic keyboards, went on to tour extensively, co-headlining the Wave-Gotik-Treffen and Zillo festivals in Germany, where two singles from "Hidden Faces" - "Out Of The Rain" and "This World" - both reached the top 10 in the independent charts. Clan Of Xymox has considered the come back of the year!

In 1998 Clan Of Xymox got signed by Metropolis Records in the USA and Pandaimonium Records in Europe.

Two more albums, "Creatures" from 1999 and "Notes from the Underground" from 2001 followed, blending guitars and electronics into a more standard electro-goth sound which has won Clan of Xymox a new generation of fans in the goth subculture.

2000 marked a first for the Clan of Xymox. After thousands of requests from fans for a live album, Clan of Xymox released "Live", a double CD which featured nineteen tracks and two videos. The LIVE lineup consisted of Ronny Moorings guitars & vocals, Mojca Zugna bass guitar, keyboards and vocals, Rui Ramos drums, and Nina Simic keyboards. All the tracks were recorded during their Central and South American tour in 1999, and could almost be considered a "Best Of". The cover, shows the stadium, Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, where they played in front of 30.000 people. Rui described it as: "The place was packed, the walls were shaking, the crowd was throbbing and they looked like a bunch of drunken sailors swimming in a rough sea. We played in this amazing stage. There was a metal grid ramp going up in a 30 degree angle towards the drums and keyboards. To play up there, we got literally lifted from underneath the stage separately with an elevator. Behind us the stage would continue going five storeys up and I was afraid the whole thing would fall down. It was an unforgettable sight!"

The year 2002 saw in April the band's first remix album "Remixes from the Underground", which was composed of all the tracks from Notes From The Underground remixed by renowned artists like Front 242, Iris and Assemblage 23. It also saw the very first video disc of COX with their (now) classic hit "Jasmine and Rose".

"Farewell" was released in September 2003 to great acclaim in the industry, followed by "Breaking Point", in April 2006. The CD single Heroes, containing two interpretations of David Bowie's original track "Heroes", was released in May 2007. The band's most recent album, "In Love We Trust", was released in 2009.

Each album so far has reached a number 1 position on various charts anywhere and would be too repetitive to mention each time. All in all the band earned a lot of respect during their existence from friend and even foe. The consistent output of quality records and the continuos tours supporting their repertoire made and makes them appreciated throughout the world. Huge commercial success they will never have as this is exactly what they do not want. All they want is to be appreciated for what they do.

The current lineup of Clan of Xymox, now based in Leipzig, Germany, consists of Ronny Moorings - produces, writes, records all music & lyrics Live members: Ronny Moorings sticks live to guitar & vocals, Mojca on bass, Mario Usai on guitar & Yvonne de Ray on keyboards.

In 2009 Clan Of Xymox signed to Trisol and remained with Metropolis in the USA , came out with the now already known classic single " Emily" "In Love We Trust", the new Clan of Xymox album was released on August 28th 2009 and got hailed by their fans as one of their best albums to date. 2010 Looks like the year Clan Of Xymox takes the material further on the road.
