Description
CHUCK BERRY - "After School Session" - Original LP (Chess LP-1426, 1957, Mono)
Up for sale is a genuine piece of rock and roll history: Chuck Berry's debut studio album, "After School Session," on the original Chess Records label, catalog LP-1426, released in May 1957. This cover has no printed yellow catalog box in the upper right corner, a detail collectors associate with the earliest run of this release, before it was added on subsequent pressings. Pressed for Chess by Monarch Record Mfg. Co., as was typical of early Chess LPs.
TRACKLIST Side 1: School Day (Ring Ring Goes the Bell) / Deep Feeling / Too Much Monkey Business / Wee Wee Hours / Roly Poly / No Money Down Side 2: Brown Eyed Handsome Man / Berry Pickin' / Together (We Will Always Be) / Havana Moon / Down Bound Train / Drifting Heart
This album compiled the A- and B-sides of Chuck Berry's first six Chess singles, making it a foundational rock and roll document - featuring "School Day," "Too Much Monkey Business," and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," songs that would go on to influence just about every guitar-driven rock act that followed.
LABEL & PRESSING DETAILS Black label with silver print, Chess "checkerboard" logo, "chess recording corp. chicago" at the bottom. Matrix/runout stamped 8448 near the spindle on Side 1. Mono only, as issued (no stereo version existed for this early a Chess LP). Housed in a plain paper inner sleeve.
CONDITION Vinyl: Very Good Plus (VG+) - glossy and clean-looking in the photos with no deep or heavy scratches visible. Not test-played, so this grade is visual only; please factor that in. Jacket: Very Good (VG) - an honest, well-loved original jacket showing ring wear, general toning to the cardboard stock, a vintage store price sticker on the front, and light corner/edge wear with a faint spine crease. No taped seams or major tears.
Please examine every photo closely, as they're considered part of the description and are the best way to judge true condition for a nearly 70-year-old piece of vinyl.
VALUE NOTE This is one of the most collectible titles in the early rock and roll canon. Per Discogs sales history for this 1957 first-pressing variant (no yellow box), copies have sold from roughly $15 up to $204, with a median near $45. Real-world completed auctions for similarly graded VG/VG+ copies have sold in the $40-$130 range. Given the strong vinyl grade here, honest (if well-loved) jacket, and clearly identifiable early pressing characteristics, this is a solid, attractively priced example for any Chuck Berry or early rock and roll collection.
