Description

Chevon & Flagstone - Flagstone Reggae Touchstone Records CH1983A, released 1983 Mint - still sealed
OK, this LP is a bit mysterious. It's a electro-reggae-rock-rap thing by a guy named Chevon and his band (which includes a backup singer named Flagstone), recorded in New York, released in 1983 by the Touchstone Records label (probably a strictly private press, since I can't find another record or single on this label). That's Chevon on the cover, I think.
I'll get to  the music in a minute. The big WTF here is that it features alto sax by none other than John Zorn. Yes, that John Zorn, in one of his earliest appearances on record (his debut was in 1978-79 on a Eugene Chadbourne record). There's no picture of John Zorn on the back cover, but his name is right there in the credits.
The music is pretty great. It's got that private-press rough-around-the-edges quality, esp. the bassist. But the fusion of different genres is pretty powerful. It mixes reggae chicken-scratch guitar, Hawkwind-esque synth washes, lots of delay, bird song, chimes, John Zorn's skronky sax.... The lyrics are a mix of consciousness (homilies and morality stories and politics), some romance, some pop-culture references.
I bought two sealed copies of this, fearing I'd never see it again. I played one copy and describe it above. The other copy, the one for sale here, is still sealed in its original shrink.
Here's the track listing:
Side A: 1. Flagstone Sound 2. Africa Rise Again 3. Jamaican Way 4. Sunlight on the Wall (May 16, 1979) 5. Searching for You
Side B: 1. War on the Border 1-2-3 (1914-2000) 2. Conquistador in Search of Gold 3. Changing Times 4. Upside Down 5. Love Who You Please 6. Chevon's Rose Garden
Happy bidding!
