Charles Mingus - Town Hall Concert, 1964, Vol. 1
(Jazz Worksop/ Charles Mingus JWS 005-S USA Stereo LP 1964)
This is a 1964 USA Stereo 1st pressing LP. This LP is extremely rare! It was only available to purchase via "Mail Order" for a brief period in the mid 1960's. This was via Charles Mingus' own "Jazz Workshop" label. Unfortunately, the sleeve is quite tatty. However, the vinyl is quite nice & clean. It doesn't look to have been played too much. Playback is Excellent to Excellent+ overall too!
This LP has a heavyweight matte sleeve which has a textured paste-on front cover. The sleeve has the "Charles Mingus Enterprises, P.O. Box 2637, Grand Central Station, New York..." address on the rear. The rear of the sleeve also has the "Mail Order Only..." text. It states that this LP is only to be purchased this way, and it is not available to purchase through normal record shop retailers. It comes with a period, mid 1960's, UK generic polythene lined plain paper inner sleeve. The record is pressed on thick vinyl & has black "Jazz Worksop/ Charles Mingus" labels with silver print. This LP was pressed by "Capitol Records". The record has 1st press matrix numbers. These are:
Side 1: SUB-491-W2
Side 2: SUB-492-W1
These are machine stamped in the dead wax. There is also a machine stamped Capitol "I AM" logo in a triangle in the dead wax on both sides too. This indicates a specific pressing plant.
This is a genuine USA Stereo 1st pressing of this rare U.S. mid 1960's Post Bop/ Modern Jazz LP. It is an excellent live recording from 1964. As stated, this LP was only available to buy via Mail order for a brief period in the mid 1960's. Subsequently, they are extremely rare nowadays. This LP also features Eric Dolphy on Alto-Saxophone.

Sleeve: Unfortunately, U.S. sleeve of this era are extremely prone to wear. This is quite a tatty copy overall. There is a seam split along the entirety of the top edge (see photos). There is a 10 cm seam split along the bottom edge too. This runs from the sleeve opening. There is moderate fading/ staining to the spine area. There is some light, mild or more moderate bit of rubbing wear, & small hairline cracking wear, on the spine face on some areas (see photo). The spine text is nearly completely rubbed away. There is mild to more moderate fading to the rear sleeve. There is light, mild or very mild ringwear & rubbing wear on some areas. Overall, Good condition
Vinyl: Surprisingly, this record doesn't actually look to have been played that much. There is a very mild 3.5 cm surface rub mark on Side 1. This is a bit thicker than a hairline mark. The inner sleeve, over time, has left some light, mild, very mild or very minor dull surface marks on some areas. This has also caused a small area of streaks at the outer edge area on Side 2. These "streaks" are a bit thicker than a hairline mark. They are very feint and can hardly be seen under a strong light. Otherwise, are some light, mild, very mild or very minor sleeve rubs which can hardly be seen under a strong light. Overall, Very Good++ condition. The labels are in Near Mint condition & show next to no spindle wear. The period UK polythene-lined inner sleeve is in Very Good condition. There is light, mild or very mild ringwear, fading & creasing. There are no seam splits.
I have fully play tested this LP. Side 1: Plays Excellent to Excellent+ overall & Near Perfect in some places. A great audio copy. Side 2: Plays Near Excellent to Excellent overall & Excellent+ in many places. There are a few intermittent light or very mild clicks near the start of Side 2. these do not last too long. Overall, a great audio copy!
