The album is considered a masterpiece in Charles Mingus' discography, following "Pithecanthropus Erectus".

The title track features a narration by Jean Shepherd, known for "A Christmas Story," telling the story of a clown who tries to please people but is only appreciated after his death.

The album also includes notable compositions like "Haitian Fight Song" and "Reincarnation of a Lovebird," a tribute to Charlie Parker.
