VINYL is EX+ (VG+++)
Full gloss vinyl is very close to NM with a very few tiny scuffs seen under hard bright light that do not affect play. LP plays NM throughout. Labels are pristine both sides.

COVER is VG+
Thick Gatefold sleeve shows small crescents of faint beginning ring wear (mostly on back). Corner bumps and small corner-tip clip at top left. Inside gatefold is super clean. No creases, writing or soil. Solid seams and spine, with small (under 1") spot of wear to top seam. No splits.

AFRO-FUNK Pioneers Heavy 1973 2nd LP?

Although underappreciated and woefully overlooked, the fine early-'70s outfit CYMANDE was one of the first to merge African rhythms with rock, funk, reggae, jazz and soul. Comprised of members who hailed from such exotic locales as Guyana, Jamaica, and St. Vincent, they only made 4 albums in all. By the '90s, CYMANDE became the recipient of a strong cult following as the track, "BRA" was included on the soundtrack to Spike Lee's motion picture Crooklyn, and several of their songs were sampled by rap artists (including Raze, Master Ace, MC Solaar, De La Soul, DJ Kool, and the Fugees).

The CYMANDE dudes have more tried and true classics under their belt than many better known 70's funk groups. All of the three Janus albums are quality stuff. CYMANDE's second LP is captivating and strong, while perhaps too political for the masses. There've been few better fusions of Reggae, Funk and Jazz than Second Time Round. Their Afro-Conscious message and spirit is in full view here, as on their 1st LP. Highlights include the spirited, upbeat "Anthracite", driven by horns on the chorus, a scorching sax solo, and a titillating flute. Flautist Mike Rose continues to captivate on the oddly titled "Willie Headache", which is far too mellow to cause listeners to grab for the Tylenol.

Everything is centered around Steve Scipo's bubbly bass notes, a good example being the hurtling "Trevorgus", another highlight in which everything (the horns, the rhythm, the chanting vocals) complements each other as if linked by an invisible chain. The group scintillates on "Fug", a rapid-fire mover and shaker that speaks of people dying because of greed and deceit.

Cymande let their dreads down on this one -- emoting, getting real, and performing like there's no tomorrow. Gotta give Pablo Gonsales a bone for his constant, creative work on the congas throughout; drummer Sam Kelly stays in the background, happy with his understated role and keeping it tight. Vocalist Ray King breaks off his best lead on the tempo changing "Bird", and Joey Dee assists vocally while patting on his conga set; Peter Serreo, and Derek Gibbs sax play sparkles from beginning to end.
