Culturcide was a Houston-based experimental punk band, active from 1980 to 1990 and from 1993 to the present day. In 1986 the band released their most famous work. Tacky Souvenirs of Pre-Revolutionary America comprised 14 tracks of the band's satirical lyrics overdubbed onto popular songs by the original artists. For example, the Beach Boys' California Girls was turned into "They Wish They All Could Be California Punks", a sideswipe at unoriginality in Punk Rock. There were also overdubs of tape loops and other sound effects. The lyric sheet carried the message "Home-taping is killing the record industry, so keep doing it."[1] The backing tracks were used without permission and the band soon faced legal threats from some of the original copyright holders.
