Label Conditions: Four fantastic very clean, fresh and attractive examples with any of the few spindle marks or traces very light, fine and faint with no wear around the hole areas. A copy purchased new by one owner who looked after his records with care.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine, even on budget turntables.

Weight of Records: 147 / 142 grams. Somewhat above average for this album. This late plum album was quickly repressed on the new Kinney format on much thinner vinyl.

Rarity: Scarce as a first UK pressing. This a very late album on the plum label that was released towards the end of its run before being replaced by the new green and orange format. So-much-so, many examples that included a UK-made cover have the new Kinney code sticker inside (as per this copy) – some UK copies included the American imported cover – this is a fully UK manufactured, and complete copy. Also finding this set with two hardly played records, insert and little worn cover is very difficult.

Brief Info: A brilliant double live album that proved to be their last under this name until 1988. Well-received and recorded, the superb performance hid the tensions within the band and they did not record together again for some time. The fall-out is even mentioned by Frank Zappa on the Mothers ‘Fillmore East’ album which is described as ‘fighting’. This a full UK-made copy – the cover unusual, as it did not include the song titles – they were featured on a lyric insert that is included. The cover is notoriously prone to wear and often in very poor conditions – especially originals with usually thicker plum label records inside, this one has has probably the least wear I have seen on a first print. Both records appear hardly played and sound terrific. The inside Kinney sticker adds to the history of this late plum pressings. For fans and collectors of this amazing quartet and label, this is a great opportunity.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably under-graded as such, this is beyond difficult to find with much less wear than this. An unlaminated gatefold format, the front and back are smooth finished, the inside is textured. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with the K 60003 Kinney sticker inside. The gatefold lyric insert is included along with the original Philips-style, same date-code polylined inner sleeves.

Cover Front: A very challenging and difficult cover to find even excellent. Matt gatefolds with dark artwork rarely avoid heavy ring wear, rubbing and creasing – first print plum copies even more so. This has a tiny surface pull near the top left corner (look hard), and little more than a few very gentle surface fine creases and the odd small surface mark or two. However, this retains impressive freshness and still clean, the lack of ugly ring wear and rubbing is a major plus on this unforgiving surface. Some copies included the America version that was imported to be used for UK pressings, they are arguably even more prone to wear.

Cover Back: Similar again, arguably better still with no sticker issues. Few creases – a quite line one near the bottom left corner area, any others very few, fine and light near the sides. Again, the avoidance of ring wear and rubbing makes for an unusual and highly attractive example.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault on these nigh-on immaculate, lightly textured surfaces, the Kinney sticker superb and clean, clearly never removed or picked at. This inside is made with a totally different style of card to the outside. Clearly this copy issued within the transition period to Kinney, hence the sticker adds significant history to this copy.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat with any rubbing very light and patchy.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with even less rubbing. Matt, dark storage edges rarely escape with so little wear, given the format, all four have fared very well and remain solid and neat.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Records enter on these edges.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine (for a change), one that actually retains all its text with minimal traces of any wear to its dark surface. Solid, straight with minimal hint compression and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. Again, probably the finest spine I have seen on a UK first print cover, this is close to exceptional as more are seen badly rubbed and even threadbare with ink and text eroded.

Corners: Tip rubs are mostly light to near moderate, fine or very fine shape retained with no major knocks, a gentle hint of a crease on back lower right tip being quite critical.

Cover Summary: Cover-protection for decades has preserved this to a very high standard. Yes a very small sticker blemish, but still a splendid example of this original first catalogue number early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better in real terms. This attractively fresh, hardly rubbed item should please many collectors, and maybe even most given the challenging nature of this ruthlessly revealing and wear-prone cover.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: or very close to. All naturally intact with neat crisp window circles and the polylinings inside still quite clear. Minimal creasing, and any ageing or discolouration mild and light and no writing. A matching original pair in the Philips style. Both have the 16 /0471 (April 1971) manufacture date text and 800513 & 973939 Patent numbers.

The Lyric Insert: MINT(–): with any blemishes/creasing tiny, and very light, bordering on minuscule. A gatefold lyric insert printed on one side only and made in England. On opening, it may appear it has suffered light-fading, but not the case, this is now this insert was printed, there is little to really fault at all, especially on the printed side which is virtually as-made and unusually fine and attractive.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. Both appear little used with any surface marks mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright light – those fine types when records were gently cleaned with a cloth recommended at the time. No penetrating stylus scratches and sound quality is clean and impressive. Visually attractive records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality double set plays even above the high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. An album with some quiet passages as fans will know, but few available copies will outperform this impressive plum pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain these records has been played only lightly and quite sparingly. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality set. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
