Label Conditions: All four look very similar and that is superb: these are very clean and fresh with only a tiny few mostly very fine and faint spindle marks mostly seen under angled light. Both discs are incredibly clean and offer magnificent sound quality.

Cat Number: 2657004.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 135 / 135 grams. Nice to get two identical weight originals, these are very good weights for any record.

Rarity: The first Plum issues are quite scarce and even more so in very fine conditions. The cover has some creasing but far less rubbing than most. Both records however appear little played and offer the clean quality sound the more discerning collectors want. This on a challenging double set with complex vocal harmonies and predomintely acoustic on the first half. Never easy to find with such clean records and sound and I regard this as a true classic.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A musically brilliant set: Young arguably dominates with stunning renditions of early favourites but includes no new material from him. The only unissued songs are by Crosby and Nash. An album of two halfs, one acoustic, one electric. On the ‘plugged-in’ record, we are treated to an extended version of Young’s masterpiece, ‘Southern Man’, clocking in at over thirteen minutes on which he jams with Stills with magnificent effect. All four members are in fine voice and form, and all get their ‘solo’ spots. A great live set and recording, all the atmosphere is captured brilliantly with clear distinct sound. No early copy of this album is easy to find in decent condition, the dark unprotected cover rarely escapes heavy ring wear and rubbing, and the delicate complex sound of the records often ruined by unsympathic heavy-tracking record players of the time. Well this one, apart from some cover creasing, has little to fault and is the best I have seen for ages.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format, the outside surfaces are smooth. The inside more unusually, is textured and made with very different card. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and this British-made cover itself is scarce, this set was often sold within US made covers that in most cases wear even less well. The original large format single-folded lyric insert is also included as well as the original Polydor date-coded inner sleeves.

Cover Front: The front has largely escaped any siginficant rubbing with any rim impression or rubbing tiny and very faint. There is a fairly fine crease on the bottom left corner which is only small. The top corner has a fairly gentle semi-crease that appears more moderate on the back side.

Cover Back: Similar again with just a fraction more hints of rim rubbing, in terms of this cover, this is as sparse and fine as it ever gets. As mentioned above, a moderate size more seen crease on the top right corner.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The pale textured inside has little to fault, the odd super-faint hint of toning, but look hard.

Top Edges: These black edges have had a little patchy tipping-in made by the one-and-only previous owner who wanted his covers to appear (to his eye) to be without rubbing. So these do look fine.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, all quite sharp with little wear with any traces of thickening or burring few. Records enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The spine is very nice: solid and mainly straight, uncompressed and folded square. So the edges meet up closely together and practically parallel, there appears to be no enhancements made to this area. All text close to perfect and unworn and the entire surface shows hardly any rubbing at all, and the same for the black folds.

Corners: There appears to be very little tip rubbing but neat tipping-in being the reason. Fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this fragile early 70’s cover, not without issues with a few edge ‘improvements’ and a couple of creases. But in terms of rubbing and ring wear, this one has largely escaped, so the main faces look clean and fine, it could prove difficult to find much better. Not for the perfectionists of course, but many collectors will be pleased. Any doubts etc, etc.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): with just a tiny tip crease to the top corners, that apart, I would have graded Mint(-). Clean, fresh and with the correct 2657004 number and printed in England. The reverse side is plain white and clean and unmounted.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Polydor lined pair that have aged a little with the usual seam browning of the adhesive. All four window circles crisp and undamaged with clear linings. Minimal creasing and all edges secure with just one tiny repair to a central split (less than 1 cm) and you would never know. These have the close-match date codes of 0471 and 0371 and are the pair that came with the record that match the issue time (as seen in close-up).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT: a fine visual pair that are clean with respectable to fine shine, intense black and solidly pressed. A pair with very fine and faint surface marks as seen under bright angled light, lesser so on the second record. These should please many collectors, but not again the visual perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play above their visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and nothing spoilt my listening experience for a wonderfully recorded and complex live set. No penetrating scratches mean no pops or clicks were noted and few available copies will outperform these very early-made records. I would go as far to say, this pair are amongst the cleanst sound ones I have heard in ages on the Plum labels and I feel certain the fine whispy surface marks being the result of dry cloth cleaning. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these lovely records. This set could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
