Label/Format: Atlantic – original red and maroon (‘plum’) format with matt surfaces and a very gentle hint of texturing. This copy is a rarer CBS pressing with different matrix codes and the tell-tale inner circle ridge and bevel further out. An elusive sub-contract pressing which are seldom seen or offered.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the very few spindle marks being very fine and faint. A superb ‘Plum’ copy with impressive looks and beautiful clean sound.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. An impressive solid weight.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, especially with a lesser-played first issue label. This the first sub-contract CBS pressing I have seen. These were pressed in way fewer numbers than the standard Phonogram pressing, which often meant cleaner pressings. And quite honestly, this classic plays little short of perfectly, this was a true delight to play-grade.

Dallas Taylor – Percussion; Gregory Reeves – bass; Jerry Garcia – steel guitar; John Sebastian – harmonica.

Brief Info: The term ‘beautiful album’ was never more appropriate than for this timeless masterpiece. After the success of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young joined the trio and instantly became a superstar, the quartet equally so, if only for only a brief time. Déjà Vu sold well, making the top spot in the US and a very healthy 5 in the UK. All four members excel with their own self-written titles, my personal favourites are Young’s delicately sensitive ‘Helpless’, Nash’s beautiful ‘Teach Your Children’ and Crosby’s post-hippy anti-establishment tour de force ‘Almost Cut My Hair’, probably the most powerful song he ever wrote. The album is awash with stunning harmonies and sublime songs and no album collection should ever be without a copy. Very difficult to find clean examples however, the cover especially is so prone to wear, which is a shame for such a lavish design. This is a nice example, with most of any wear on the bottom edges, with less on the top pair. The CBS manufacture record – almost certainly sub-contracted to them to meet early demand – is fantastic, and offers supreme clean sound. Remember, contract pressings were manufactured in far less numbers than standard issue, and most will benefit from cleaner, more reliable sound quality. This is a gem that most audio purists will treasure.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): it could be strongly argued better still for one of the most intolerant and unforgiving covers of its time, most of any wear on the bottom storage edges. An unlaminated gatefold with matt finish. The front and back are beautifully, and heavily textured, the inside is smooth. Gold leaf is applied to the front and spine, this lightly embossed. The front picture panel is a paste-on sheet, again delicate. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. The Polydor-style inner sleeve is date-coded 0770 (July 1970), so clearly an early example.

Cover Front: Difficult hardly covers this one: a very dark brown textured surface, with gold block embossed text and a shaped paste-on graphic picture. Firstly, the embossed gold text and details are little short of perfect, as seen in my close-up picture. The same goes for the graphic panel. The textured surface have only gentle rubbing (patchy gentle speckle) to the raised-dot style texturing. Finding one with virtually none is close to impossible. This is an attractive front with only scant clues to age and vulnerability.

Cover Back: This impossibly difficult large brown area is again in very fine condition, with so many seen heavily ring worn and/or badly rubbed, this can only be described as impressive with again, only gentle patchy speckle rubs to raised dot surfaces here-and-there. The lack of ring wear is a massive plus. Corner tip rubs with minimal visible edge rubbing, few will show much less ink loss. An extra plus-point as well, both sides show minimal hint of creasing.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault at all, very nice indeed as seen.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat, most of any rubbing near the ends which is moderate.

Bottom Edges: Less patchy moderate rubbing to these storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both mainly sharp with any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on. Both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine that has fared very well indeed. Solid, straight with no compression or tilt. Folded impressively square as well, so the edges are flush and parallel. There is minimal rubbing to the deep brown surface and the gold, gently embossed text is superbly intact and clean. Even the folds have avoided scuffs or rubbing of any note. One of the best spines I have yet seen on this unforgiving cover.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with very fine shape largely retained with no bashes or evidence of dinks.

Cover Summary: One of the greatest covers ever, lavishly made, but unforgiving for wear, and so difficult to find better preserved examples. This not perfect, but with most wear on the top and bottom edges, and the main areas still impressive, it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the Polydor-style inner has aged very well with minimal hint of paper darkening, even to the seam adhesive area. One neat line crease each side, little else, all edges unsplit with no repairs. Two crisp, undamaged window circles, the polylining clear and still fresh. Date-coded 0770 (July 1970) making this copy one of the earlier ‘Plum’ label copies I have had.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better as in normal room light, this looks superb. Only with scrutiny under bright light, a few wispy surface traces are seen. Totally harmless super-fine blemishes, even finer than hairlines, there are no penetrating stylus scratches at all. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with lovely sine and very solidly pressed. This offers supreme sound throughout and along with lovely looks, this should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality ‘Plum’ pressing – manufactured by CBS Records – a company that were very reliable for impressive, clean pressings, plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and equally detailed sound. From the immensely quiet and gorgeous guitar strums from the left channel right at the very start, you will know you have something extra special here. Any surface sound hint minimal, barely anything from this less-mass-produced copy. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played only lightly and clearly, with due care. The vocal harmonies are crystal clear and sharp, precise and fully focused with no tracking issues*. Not all copies will ever guarantee that, invisible pressing noises on utmost clean copies can be encountered, but this has avoided any. Vocals and backing have an in-the-room quality and play-grading was a genuine pleasure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and my LP12 reveals all – good and bad – but nothing bad on this example. This record will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended – a beautiful, top-quality sub-contract pressing and all-round example of an evergreen classic.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
