Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a few, very light and faint spindle marks seen under angled light. Any handling evidence is very modest indeed and this classic looks only lightly and carefully played.

Weight of this Record: 146 grams. 36 grams heavier than the last plum copy I offered, this being one of the heaviest pressing examples I have had.

Rarity: Moderately scarce as an item, but very hard indeed to find Plum copies in really fine conditions. Another difficult prone to all forms of wear and seldom seen devoid of often substantial rubbing, ringwear, fading and dulling of the crucial gold block areas.

Brief Info: The term ‘beautiful album’ was never more appropriate than for this timeless masterpiece. After the success of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young joined the trio and instantly became a superstar, the quartet equally so, if only for only a brief time. Déjà Vu sold well, making the top spot in the US and a very healthy No 5 in the UK. All four members excel with their own self-written titles, my personal favourites are Young’s delicately sensitive ‘Helpless’, Nash’s beautiful ‘Teach Your Children’ and Crosby’s post-hippy anti-establishment tour de force ‘Almost Cut My Hair’, probably the most powerful song he ever wrote. The album is awash with stunning harmonies and sublime songs and no album collection should ever be without a copy. Very difficult to find clean copies however, the cover especially is so prone to wear, which is a shame for such a lavish design. This is certainly one of the better ones I have seen for some time and mostly lacks the above traits this normally acquires over the years. It was bought by a lady who clearly looked after her records well – she did put a small numbered sticker on the top right corner of the front, which has dried and naturally peeled off, leaving only a light dull residue, but NO pulls, tears or ink loss (NO tipping in either). It shows little but could be a small issue for the highly discerning collector. But finding ‘perfect’ example of this cover is a near impossible task anyway and this has little else of major concern – blemishes yes – but far less than most seen. The superb first issue record, and this is early with an impressive weight and sound quality. A delicate and complex album of vocal harmony and a number of acoustic songs. This plays superbly with barely anything unwanted – never, ever, take that for granted – only around 1 in 4 of these I get to hear, ever makes the grade good enough to be offered, and this easily makes the grade. I enjoyed this classic immensely, this too played on very sensitive equipment.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: it could be strongly argued better still for one of the most intolerant and unforgiving covers ever made. An unlaminated gatefold with matt finsh. The front and back are beautifully textured, the inside is smooth. Gold leaf is applied to the front and spine, this lightly embossed. The front picture panel is a paste-on sheet, again ultra delicate. It was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: As stated above, this was owned from new by a carefuly lady buyer and it has been cover-protected for the majority of it’s time. A really dark brown and rarely seen with such little wear. Photographing the front is not easy as any direct flash from a camera reflects off the gold block and it disappears. Hence, my front photograph was taken at an angle in front of a window to avoid this happening. Hopefully it can be seen this has little wear at all. The paste-on picture is in great shape with no picking or burring to the edges and this has barely any rubbing and any marks are really fine, faint and small and none even show with normal viewing. Any chipping to the very edge of this panel are tiny only. The general lack of rubbing, chipping, fading, ring marks or scuffing is a massive bonus to the main textured areas. With multitudes of raised ‘dimples’, speckle is a factor on most, but all areas of this texturing retains nigh-on complete ink retention with any surface ‘whites’ beyond tiny and faint. The extreme corner tips have small rubs, but so few will not have this as a bare minimum. Any creasing is equally light with just a couple of three ultra fine hairlines on the spine edge. Of crucial importance is the gold block: the text, logos and ornamentation is near pristine and it gives the cover that real classy look. No dulling, tarnishing or blackening, all still a real golden colour with fantastic detail. I know the print industry well and this block finish was expensive to reproduce, and the expense in creating a cover like this would have been considerable, thus it is not seen often on any album cover. Lastly, for the front, the small sticker mark appears as a light square outline dull with no surface damage at all. It appears like a removed stamp hinge on the back of a postage stamp (for those who know about this hobby). It may with utmost care remove altogether, but I hardly consider worthy of the risk as it has such modest visibility. Overall this front sets a very high standard and will never be easy to beat.

Cover Back: This impossibly difficult large brown area is again in very fine condition, with so many seen heavily ringworn, this can only be described as amazing. Any speckle very slight indeed and can be justifiably said to be mere traces. Like the front, this side has minimal creasing – a few fine edge hairlines again on the spine that are near impossible to avoid totally. Unfaded and aged little, these large, one colour solid backs are so difficult to find like this. The very end of the left opening edge shows the merest hint of white with the odd tiny burr trace and again a little rubbing to the corner tips. But this complements the impressive front perfectly and sets the bar high.

Cover Inner Gatefold: As near perfect as you will wish to see.

Top Edges: Any rubs, fades or scuff traces are tiny, few and faint. Nice to see fragile edges retaining almost all their ink.

Bottom Edges: Practically the same all all straight. Just a little rubbing towards the corner areas. Being the traditional storage edges and so dark, few will show less wear than these.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is totally and perfectly neatly open, faint traces of the original adhesive can be seen, so it appears not enough to hold for the long term. I decided to leave this alone as it looks so neat and crisp anyway. Re-adhesion can cause waving of the card and I do not deem it necessary to even consider doing. The back storage edges, have minimal traces of thickening or burring and also remain neat. All are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way, simple care and lack of usage has meant these delicate areas have remained very neat with minimal traces of wear.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. Folded impressively square as well, all the edges are flush and parallel and probably the neatest I have seen this respect for ages? The ultra fragile fine gold text is unworn and very neat indeed, so many of these rub and fade away but this is nigh on perfect and even retains a more than a hint of it’s original shine. Minimal creasing and most-all of the brown surface intact with barely any rubs or scuffing. Even those fragile folds are largely the same. One very small tip-in trace possible, or faint scuff to the top fold near the centre – it registers little. Overall, I consider all edges on this unforgiving cover to be excellent or better.

Corners: Corner tip rubbing is moderate. Covers this dark will rarely escape some and of course, will show more. But nothing serious and better this (in my opinion) than heavy, obvious filling in with felt pens which always plain stupid. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: One of the greatest covers ever, lavishly made (but fragile) and so difficult to find preserved well. There is no faking or artificial way of making this cover look good – it’s either in poor condition or better looked after to give a chance – being honest, I think I have undergraded this one, especially with all considered. This is one to hold and enjoy, not hide away. Any blemishes or wear on this one are light and little detracts from it’s original beauty. This impressive example should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(-): only marked down a little due to ageing in the form of glue toning on the seams and general darkening. This robustly polylined Polydor inner has just one corner crease and two pristine window circles. The lining ultra clear with minimal crinkle and all the edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly, this is date-coded 0770 (July 1970), so this copy is very early indeed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably undergraded at even that. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. Even this grading hardly does this beauty justice – even under light very few surface marks or traces at all. One small one on side on has NO sound at all. A copy played very little on all the evidence, and typical from the lovely collection it came from. As stated already, one lady owner. A lovely early issue that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely ‘Plum’ classic plays up too and even beyond it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. From the immensely quiet and gorgeous guitar strums from the left channel right at the very start, you will know you have something extra special here. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and the record, very carefully handled. The vocal harmonies are crystal clear and sharp, precise and fully focused and the general lack of surface noise is very pleasing. Not all copies will ever guarantee that, invisible pressing noises on utmost clean copies can be encountered, but this has avoided any. Vocals and backing have an in-the-room quality and play-grading was a pleasure in it’s entirety. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and my LP12 reveals all – good and bad – but nothing bad on this gem. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – and the cover’s not half bad either – a lovely all-round example.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
